    ... with bright oranges, yellows and reds! The road runs along the crest and there are plenty of pull-outs that probably provide great views, but low clouds kept us from seeing much. Wildlife we saw: turtles and otters in Otter Lake, deer, and a snake named Carl. (Snake's name courtesy of Forest Ranger.)

    Trail Days did weird things to the distribution of hikers on the trail. People scurried to the nearest town to grab rides to Damascus; some did big miles to get to the next town in time, while others, like me and the people I was hiking with, hit a town and stopped so we wouldn't be too far past it. So you ended up with big hiker bubbles around a lot of the towns within a couple hundred miles of Damascus, and Pearisburg had probably the largest. AWOL, the guy who wrote the guidebook ...

    ... of Damascus was pretty rough. There was a big climb right out of town, and it didn't help that I had just resupplied and had a lot of food weight in my pack. The terrain leveled out after the climb and has been great since. I've really enjoyed the flatter trail that is in Virginia.     ... it justice - they just don’t convey the immenseness of it. I followed the path, nearly a mile long, beyond the natural bridge to Lace Falls and by the time we were back, Minnie and I were both feeling pretty tired. By good fortune, there was a shuttle bus waiting to take us back up the hill. After all, two really long walks in one day is a bit much.
