... had to stop and ask for more directions at Marposa, only to be told "Those GPS things just don't work up here in the mountains!" Now we can blame the Navman *****. We also noticed that Triangle Road just goes up into the mountains and comes back out onto the highway about 20 miles further up.

... our desert adventure was over. I no longer had the stomach to find snakes or drive through the desert without a 4x4. I would like to say though that I believe the 3 hour diversion was worth it though, purely for some of the views we had in the desert (nothing for miles around – vast expanses of next to nothing can indeed be beautiful) and for the tortoise encounter.

... feeling well, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful views as we make the climb. As we hike further South, the land becomes more desert-like and as we approach Crabtree Meadows, we see Mt. Whitney in the distance. We hike 20 miles and Val is still feeling pretty good -- still all smiles. For the first time, we pitch the tent and have time to wash off in a creek, and have dinner before dark! Thanks, Val :)

As I wander through this new found world, I found a new way to feel like I am on top of the world. The clouds are so bright in that baby blue sky with the rays of the sun shining brightly upon me.
