      More border hopping

      ... the mighty Mississippi River.

Along the way we made a detour at Olmsted to see where they are building a new lock which will replace locks 52 (at Paducah) and 53 at Olmsted. It is a massive project which will enable the Ohio to be navigable all year round even in the dry summer.

At Cairo, we crossed the Mississippi into Missouri. A very utilitarian bridge quite narrow with a sharp bend at the end as the road stays on the top of the levee bank. Luckily it is ...

... central states are more interested in letting you know you have crossed into them than on the eastern seaboard. We travelled on the 64 and the time zone crosses this highway several times so we did not bother to change our clocks until we knew we were definitely in the Central Time Zone.

Today was a welcome rest day. We now head into the hills of Kentucky. Some of us patronized the local bike shops and checked and adjusted our machines for the hills to come. I visited bike shops, thrift store, the local library and generally cruised around town looking for history. I found history in an old cemetary that is registered on the national historic preservation list. Woodlawn cemetary was the ...

      Chester to Carbondale

We ventured out of Chester this morning competing for space on the highway for 8 miles with monstrous coal trucks!!! Shortly after reaching Cora, however, we were rewarded with miles of traffic-free riding on the Mississippi River Levee making our way through fields of corn and soy bean. Pure hell on the road followed by some of the most beautiful and peaceful cycling that you could ...
