Austin/Fort Stockton...Beauty and the Beast

... for sopping up sauce, and all you can eat. We took a hearty portion with us on the road.

Joe and I loved Austin. Great city, great people, even Bonnie at the Walgreens wasn’t surly and rude. She got a little snippy when we wouldn’t buy her candy bars to support the local charity, but wished us a happy day all the same.

We then started our drive to Fort Stockton and the scenery was quite beautiful. The hills looked kind of furry. We then ...

... do! I'd like to thank all the people who responded to my decision to stop riding South. People who know me well enough realize that I have wanted to do this trip for a very long time and it took a lot of onerous thought to come to the conclusion that it isn't right for me at this time. Another time, not alone, with skill in Spanish, plus coming to the realization that a lot of people do not live at the same standard as we are fortunate to have in Canada. Distance Travelled: 745 Km

From Cool to Hot !!!

... I saw a large area where there were thousands of "cows" and it appeared that that they were being inspected by men who were interested in buying them. I stopped to take a couple of photographs of two donkeys, burros or asses. I'm not sure what the proper term is, but they reminded me of two friends I have back in Ottawa who have two donkeys as pets. I rode through thousands of acres of pecans. They are very large trees. I stopped at a pecan ...

... to Mexico and just a few miles down the road from the US Border Patrol checkpoint; - A beautiful butterfly which probably kept us company from Mission to Del Rio, and quickly escaped through the window I opened, after kissing me on the cheek... Ahhh those Canadian butterflies...

... but no longer. An exit on I-10 put them back on the map. They have a giant Road Runner statue in "Downtown". (Wiley was nowhere in sight), and a sample Oil Pumper-thingy you can get an up-close look at. Pretty neat. All-in-all we saw a lot of open land. PHOTO_ID_L=road_runner.jpg] Tomorrow it's off to San Antonio and Brother John.

The middle of nowhere

... realize are there until you pick the stupid thing! After getting the tweezers out and extracting the thorns from both of our fingers, we cut the fruit open. What a disappointment! The entire center was seeds with only a thin layer of flesh around the inside of the skin. To top it off, it didn't even taste very good. We'll definitely leave them to the birds. On to Las Cruces.

Our night in...

... 930pm and here we stay. Will write more when we get to Arizona tomorrow evening. Scott called and told me that our dog AJ was looking out the window for us. Wandering and wondering where we were at. I cried leaving him knowing that in 2 months he wont be the same dog. I cried knowing that he was looking for us. I just hope scott pays attention to him. I really do.

... history. They included the San Antonio - Chihuahua Trail, San Antonio - San Diego Mail Route, Butterfield Overland Mail Route and the Great Comanche War Trail. To protect travelers, the U.S. Army established a cavalry post in 1858. It was abandoned in 1861 due to the Civil War. In 1867 Fort Stockton was re-established and garrisoned by four companies of the 9th Cavalry, one of the new regiments created for the newly freed black men.

The first misadventure

Approximately 12 miles north of Fort Stockton, Texas there was an abrupt loss of power in the bus. No warning lights were flashing, nonetheless the bus was coming to a gradual halt. The fuel gauge indicated slightly above reserve. The fuel gauge was wrong, we were out of gas. A couple of swift smacks to the dash board and the fuel gauge dropped to it's "empty" position. It was not a dramatic event - the bus simply turned itself off as Paul navigated to the side of ...
