Home of the Himba.

... they can live according to their ancestral traditions, in peace.

One of the things that makes them unique is the natural make up that women cover their entire body with. It's made of a mixture of soil, animal fat and herbs and has a thick and greasy feel to it.

As water is scarce, no water is ever used in the body cleaning process. The women burn a different mixture of hay, natural herbs and animal fat. It then produces ...

... I think on the entire 9ish hour drive, I slept for most of it which is rare for me because I can never sleep on the truck. I felt better after sleeping or when laying down but when I would sit or stand, I felt bad. I decided to try to eat since its been awhile. I kept down my ham sandwich for lunch. We arrived at our next bush camp for the night and it was very different from what we’ve been at before. We were in the desert and ...

hmm can you tell i work with kids??

Today we stopped off at a traditional Himba village. This tribe is more common in North West Namibia, but this village (or collection of villages as they are semi-nomadic) was set up as an orphanage project, to look after children from all over southern africa, and abused or divorced himba women.

There are over 20 children looked after 18 women and 4 men. They all wear traditional dress (goat skin mini-skirts, jewellery ...

Seals and cheetahs

Well we managed to find one last connection here before we head out into the game parks, so time for a quick entry. Sunday morning, we headed up the Atlantic coast from Swakopmund, and made a pit stop at a huge colony of seals at Cape Cross. There were literally thousands upon thousands...just a complete mass of seals as far as you could see along the shore, and tons more swimming in the ocean. The smell was ...

North to Etosha via Skeleton Coast

Leaving Swakopmund we drove up the Skeleton Coast and into the National Park. We stopped at the Seal Reserve at Cape Cross which as the guide describes is possibly the smelliest place in the world. Seals as far as the eye could see and lots of pups as it is the breeding season. They apparently get attacked by Jackals but we didn't see any although we got talking to a guy who says that a lot of culling ...

... a reason to take an orange from the fruit plate and toss it at a girl, having a bite and reading her book? He starts screaming again. I leave my food where it is and go away. We check out at 11 and start our 500something ride to Outjo. Where the Tomcat booked the Etosha Garden Hotel (etosha-garden-hotel.com). We drive to Dildo land! Enormous termite hills, everywhere. At one point, we have the choice: 160km paved road or 80km gravel ...

Ek vra of ...

... me when I get home! We also got to climb these amazing sand dunes to watch the sun rise and then go on a tour with a local bushman to learn all about how they lived and are still living, it really is amazing. The group is good but a lot of time I feel like I am on an episode of road rules. People's patience wears pretty thin and I am getting to that point to seeing as we spend EVERY minute together. My trip is basically broken into two groups though so I will be ...

Namibia - Cheetah Park and Etosha National Park

All, We arrived at our first set of major parks a few days back... absolutely amazing. Within 24 hours we saw multiple cheetahs, lions, elephants, rhinos, Zebras and more springbok than you would know what to do with. Interestingly enough, last night we also saw Lions mate... all of this in the wild, near our camp! The photos don't show how close we actually were - all photos were taken with our point and shoot are uploaded without cropping... but take a peek :) Myles and D'Lynn
