        ... which involves either standing on a chunk of metal that digs into the snow, or deploying a snow hook which does exactly what its name suggests and is akin to a car's handbrake.

        By the time we were ready to leave the dogs had worked themselves into a frenzy of excitement. If it were not for the snow hooks, I'm sure we would all have flown at warp speed into the forest. My dogs' names are Axel, Plupp, Optix and Lurwas (not sure about the spelling).         ... forgot to mention that it is still an unseasonable 86 degrees today - for 3 or 4 hours on the border between Sweden and Norway. Apparently, there are signal problems in Norway and all rail traffic is at a standstill. It is hot and uncomfortable. And, all we have eaten today (after toast for breakfast) is a bag of Doritos and two nearly rotten pears. But, the good news is that we can get off the train and drink from a stream ...

        ... and so took a trip to see.

        This was the old Kiruna station which has only closed within weeks. The main door was locked and a note on the window said "if you want a room please call this number". I tried the number but as I don't know the code for Sweden it would not work.

        I wandered about taking photos of the old buildings and station area. Machines were busy lifting the track and smashing up the platforms.
