Our second rest day today and zero walking miles. We have however travelled several hundred. Last night after finishing in Haltwhistle, we jumped in a taxi and headed for the airport, catching the last flight to Heathrow. Our aim, to surprise Lucy. As an echo of the old Monty Python joke, you can say what you like about the ancient Romans, but they did know how to build roads: straight ones at that. As a walker, especially in difficult country, this is bliss.. no ...

... Burts Hotel, somewhere we used to take the kids as a treat! The manager, Nicholas Henderson, was fascinated by our challenge and kindly donated. Eventually we could delay no longer and we set out in steady rain. We worked our way out of Melrose via the site of the Roman fort (Trimontium) down to the Tweed. At this stage the heavens really opened. We sheltered for a while but as it showed no sign of easing, we resigned ourselves ...
