We had our lunch at a Russian church a little way outside of town in Shipka. We have now seen 100% of the Russian churches in the country. This particular church is here because there were Russian troops here at one time fighting a war against the Turks. It's huge compared to the little Russian church in Sofia. We entered Bulgaria with the anticipation of better roads. This anticipation was fulfilled.

Democracy came to Bulgaria in 1990, being a Soviet ally for almost 40 years prior, however, to our naive eyes, born into a democratic world, it seems no one told the Bulgarians!

The remnants of the soviet communist influences weigh heavily on this land, especially in the architecture.
