Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Dunas Suites and Villas Resort Maspalomas

    Hotel encantador

    from

    Wonderful relaxing stay

    from

When I came to this hotel I did not know what to expect as I had only seen pictures on the website. I have to say that when I arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel far exceeded my expectations in virtually every regard.

First I will share one of the negative points though. I signed up for the full body massage at the Wellness spa. While it was a great massage, it was only 40 minutes when it was supposed to be an hour, plus it was late in starting as well...because "the room was not ready."

Also, I found the gym to be small and there was not much of a diversity of equipment...needless to say, if you're into weight training...don't count on this gym to give you an adequate workout.

The pool was AMAZING. Or should I say the few pools were amazing...my favorite was the indoor one though with the waterfalls and many areas to sit and enjoy the bubbling water, which is an amazing 36 degrees celcius.

Take advantage of the sauna, sanaruim, and steam bath as well!

The suite was great...one day there was even fruits and champagne brought for us. Very thoughtful of the staff. Also there was no trouble with the language barriers either, most had a good grasp of the english language.

The beach was only a 15 minute walk away and if you wish to do so, you can walk across the sand dunes. But make sure you wear sandles...the sand is HOT.

I would definately return to this resort for another stay...unfortunatly I could only stay for 4 nights though...I wish it were longer.

Great hotel, shame about the food

    from

We have just returned from a one-week stay at this hotel. We travelled with 2 adults, one five-year old and a toddler of 18 months. Our room was pleasant, clean and had the travel cot waiting. The bedsettee in the sitting area was just about suitable for our 5-year old. It wouldn't be any good for older children. The room was cleaned daily and most days we were provided with fresh towels.

The lay-out of the hotel is great, providing a sense of space. All the swimming pools were well maintained and there were plenty of sunbeds etc. There are lots of beautiful flowers and palm trees. The gym isn't very big and the equipment is rather dated. They offer massages and there is a sauna at an extra charge.

Unfortunately, our toddler was taken ill. Fortunately, a doctor visits the hotel twice on weekdays and was very friendly and treated our daughter very well. There are two chemist's within walking distance.

The staff at reception speak several langauges and were generally speaking very friendly. The waiters and waitresses were also friendly and helpful.

Our all-inclusive package was the only letdown and we strongly advise you to give it a miss. The food was disappointing (lots of the dishes made several appearances throughout the week). It was all rather bland and the children were not sufficiently catered for. Both our children are very easy eaters, but little appealed to them. A children's menu would have been better. The afternoon tea and cake isn't worth mentioning and the ice-creams were very basic (especially compared to the ones on sale!). Drinks included were okay, but again a limited choice.

On the whole, we enjoyed our stay and would go again if visiting Gran Canaria.

    Hello all

Apologies in advance for my english but I found that website so useful that I feel like informing everyone about my holidays in Dunas suite hotel

First of all you have to know that when we arrived to the south of the island we were really surprised seeing all these horrible buildings belonging to Playa del Ingles

When you leave Playa del Ingles to Maspalomas which is only 2 minutes driving as the two areas are stuck together, you will notice the difference as none of the building are built above palm trees height except for the top hotel (RIU PALACE - LOSEPAN etc...)

Dunas is really worth the while because you never have that feeling of "a to many buildings around you"

All the villas are built in a sort of tropical garden with palm trees coconut trees, flowers etc...

the only problem was really the food and I still can't figure out how can people waste their time for breakfast lunch and dinner at the buffet.

after 4 or 5 days we really had enough with the same things

Tomatoes, cucumber, fruits, hardly any good meat

In fact the truth is that we only have to add USD 150 which is EUR 120 to get the half board option which is pretty cheap to feed someone for a week

The best thing to do really is to rent a car for EUR 145 a week and to go to eat to some lovely places where you can eat good paellas and other seafood

I would give that hotel a 7.5 - 8/10 and would recommend it to any one who is after a lovely time in a non crowded hotel

Note that the hotel has 4 swimming pool and that you will always find one where it will be quiet enough to read a book or simply to rest

Every morning at around 10 there was a welcome song announcing the beginning of activities for the kids

I would go back to this hotel if I decided to go back to Gran Canaria

    Lovely hotel

I stayed here for a week from 5 nov 05, im a single female early 40s, i went on my own, looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday. It was great, the staff were all very helpful, the rooms, which are all on one level are like bungalows, they have a spacios lounge with tv and fridge, good size twin bedroom, and big bathroom, with a terrace. The main pool area was a bit crowded with sunbeds too close together, but there were other pools with less beds and more space. Breakfast was buffet style with lots to choose from, dinner was buffet again, but you had to choose to eat at 6, or 8 o clock and stick to it, again with plenty of choice. There werent a lot of British people staying here, a mix of other nationalitys. We were only about 10 minutes walk to a beautiful beach, or the hotel had a free bus 3 times a day. A ten minute walk up past the family beach you came to a nudist beach, all areas were very clean, with plenty of sunbeds and beach bars. Entertainment in the hotel wasnt the best, younger kids had a mini club, they looked well organised, the kids looked like they were having fun. Maspalomas dosnt have a great night life. i really enjoyed my holiday and would recommend my hotel, for anyone wanting to be close to the beach.

Poor food, poor service, never again.

    from

This hotel has a cafeteria style restaurant which is brightly lit and is staffed by bad tempered and ill mannered waiters.

On both days that i ventured in for breakfast the hot food was cold and there were no free tables, they were either occupied or piled up with dirty plates.

Our bathroom had a nasty smell of drains each morning and it took 3 days to get the room cleaned to a decent standard.

Nearly all the staff speak German but virtually no English.

When checking in I had to wait around 5 minutes while two staff had an argument. I would not go back to this hotel under any circumstances!!

    The Dunas bungalows

    from

Arrived well after midnight, reception were very responsive, guiding us without fuss to our 'Bungalow' accomodation, a cold meal had been put aside for us in the restaurant. Just what we needed after a long journey with the usual delays built in.

We concur with previous reviewers about the general air of the resort. It has that low rise spread-out feel about it based roughly on the shape of a four leafed clover with bungalows at the periphery and beyond, surrounding palm gardens with a central pool, behind which is the bar.

The buffet style restaurant worked really well with a menu presenting food of high quality with excellent choice, where you can eat as much as you like! The Chefs, waiters and waitresses always wore a smile, were prompt and efficient.

Drinks and lunches are served at the poolside bar at reasonable prices. Its easy, perhaps to easy, to put everything on a 'Tab', but it certainly makes the holiday flow easily without having to fumble about with change.

The hotel is well situated being a gentle 10 -15 minute stroll alongside the storm drain to the beach on the edge of the dunes. A nature reserves resides next to and at the end near to the beach.

The 'Dunas' hotel is the closest to the beach apart from several Five star hotels which dominate the area near to the beach around the Faro lighthouse and to the west along the promonade.

Hotel clientele are dominated by Germans, its most probably their reputation for insisting on the best that contributes to the good overall standard of the hotel. Most hotel staff spoke some English, but spoke more in German, so it was a matter of getting used to the greeting 'Gutten Morgen'.

If we intend to visit the Gran Canaria again, we would definitely consider staying at this hotel again. We found the resort and the Faro area relatively clean. There is a lot of new development going on in the area. Will it be the same when we go back?

We have given this hotel 5 golds, because we think it deserves more 'above average'!!!!

Quality surroundings & food at this hotel

    from

The previous person's review is extremely accurate. Would add that the complex has a lovely secluded feel with fantastic palm gardens. The rooms are set out in horse-shoe shaped groups so it feels like each small group of rooms has it's own private garden. It is extremely peaceful and relaxing with loads of wild bird life singing and flying about. The Hotel restaurant for Breakfast and Dinner is buffet style and really is pretty fantastic being both high quality and wide ranging. And you can eat as much as you like! There is a poolside bar for lunch which is also pretty good. The hotel is well situated being a gentle 10 -15 minute stroll from the beach through nature reserves on either side (there is also a regular bus shuttle). It is the closest hotel to the Beach except for the three or so five star the hotels actually on the front itself. The hotel clientele are almost exclusively German but don't let that put you off as this is probably a contributory factor to the food and service being so good. We found the German guests to be a little reserved but much preferable to being around your average Brit holidaymaker. If you do find yourself pining for the sound of English you can always take a walk up to the Faro 2 shopping centre where you will find all the usual suspects. Although the hotel staff obviously speak English if you try a little basic Spanish this is appreciated as the Germans seem to make no effort at all in this regard. The hotel has a number of good facilities including a gym if you can find the will and energy! Would definitely visit again.

    Excellent & Quiet Hotel

    from

A lovely bungalow style hotel with excellent facilities, staff, bars, resteraunt and 4 lovely pools. The hotel mainly caters for Germans and the food is also orientated this way, that aside it is excellent quallity and plentyfull. There are plenty of shops and bars within easy waling distance, a good and regular bus service or very good and cheep taxi service. Unfortunatly the Germans tend to go to bed at 10pm so the hotel entertainment is dreadfull but there is so much going on around it really doesn't matter and to be honest is probably a bonus as it makes you explore the area. The rooms are cleaned and changed on a daily basis and are of excellent standard all having a lounge area, large bedroom and on-suite bathroom. Definetley worth a return visit.

The tanks of Antonio were not that successful. The tanks with the least fish had 20 live individuals, and the tanks with the most had 40. This meant that more days had to pass to allow the Seriola to grow a bit stronger, and hopefully survive the transportation process.
15 specimens were randomly caught from my Winning tanks that contained the larger fish. They were removed from their tanks, placed in a bucket with ice (this kills them), and ...
