Historical Traveler Reviews of Dunalastair Pitlochry
Fantastic Weekend Break
from A TripAdvisor Member
Just returned from a weekend festive break, what a treat. A warm, welcoming and relaxing environment. The food was superb and the rooms were warm, clean and comfortable. All of the staff without exception were very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and not only will recommend to others but will certainly return.
Fantastic Location for this old & quaint Hotel
from real-glasgow-guy
I booked the hotel for a weekend with my wife and family. Enjoyed it very much. A good buffet breakfast. A quiet hotel, Our rooms was situated next to the main street but I never heard anything for traffic outside (which was great). The bar was friendly and very quiet as everyone was just enjoying the relaxation. The olnt downside is that there is not much for children but to be honest I never really asked as we were all to busy relaxing. It is a very old but quaint hotel set in amazin backdrop of mountains and Lochs. The location is perfect if you want to get away but I suggest you hire a car to get there.
the local areas are awash with history, Kinloch Rannoch, Killiecrankie, Dunkeld & Pitlochry, and its a great central location for touring Scotland
Dont be put off by August 24th 2004 West Lothian comment
from A TripAdvisor Member
The comments of the reviewer from West Lothian above are very misleading. This is an excellent hotel in it's price range, full of beautiful period funiture and features. Rooms are comfortable and tastefully funished. very attractive lounge and dining room Staff could not have been more helpful, food excellent and a real effort to cater for the non-smoker.
Well worth a visit.
I like the Dunalastair

I've stayed at the Dunalastair several times and have to say that I find it an excellent hotel. Any time I've been there the rooms have been spotless, the food is great and the staff are very friendly. Give it a try.
Not Highland hospitality at its best
from Bec4
A strange way to start a critical review but in this hotels defence 1) We had just come from an excellent hotel in Speyside, which was everything this one claims to be and more 2) We paid a very low rate for the room-otherwise I would have been more annoyed. However I would advise anyone looking for a friendly atmospheric hotel to give this one a miss. We had originally booked a 4 poster room but on arrival the room was tatty and certainly in need of an upgrade. We changed to a standard room which had sort of been upgraded, but it looked like your average inner city motel room rather than a Highland Hotel, the carpet in the bathroom and toenails on the floor did nothing to improve our notion of the hotel. The girl on reception was not impressed we had asked to be moved and when on departure I said thanks and goodbye(no harm in being polite -if not truthful) she didn't even answer. We have travelled all over Scotland and this by far has been our most disappointing hotel. This hotel should upgrade its rooms to the same standard as its new internet site. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THIS WEBSITE -IT IS NOT A TRUE REFLECTION OF THIS HOTEL.Finally if you are a non smoker be warned the first thing that hits you when you enter this hotel is the smell of stale smoke -it didn't get any better
A rare combination
from A TripAdvisor Member
A rare combination of excellent service and good food. Staff could not be more helpful from moment of arrival, starting by giving a conducted tour of hotel and facilities. Tradational decor but clean and comfortable. Good choice on dinner menu and all well presented and tasty. A choice of quiet residents' lounge and public bar.
Stayed a week and din't want to leave
from A TripAdvisor Member
Just like home they promised me when I called to check our reservation. What a beautiful location, right in the heart of Perthshire, about 2 hours out of Edinburgh city by car.
We stayed at this hotel because of the castles, distilleries and nature that we saw on their site. It's about 5 minutes walk from an amazing lake and is surrounded by mountains.
The hotel itself is old and family run. Some of the help have been there for years and I must say that they are really accommodating to foreigners. They even let me use their Internet!
Food is good, but too much to eat there for a week, so we went out to restaurants and bars that they reccommened. It's not a place for those who want to be right in the action, but great for those who want to spend quiet quality time together.
The highlight of the trip was when James, the Manager took us fishing on the local river and also when we joined in with the locals in the stables bar at the back of the hotel.
If you are going, make sure you vist Blair Castle, The smallest whisky distillery in the world that makes House of Lords whisky, and also take a look at the House of Bruar which I was told was the equivalent to a mini Harrods in Scotland!
Helpful local staff

We stayed at Dunalastair in the fall 2003 and must say that we had the most brilliant time. The hotel is over 250 years old so you get the genuine Scottish experience. The owners have been there for over 15 years and their son knows much of the local knowledge. One of the staff knew the local area's fishing hotspots and was able to take us to some 'secret' places. If you like hotels that are out of the way and have authentic character then we would reccommend you stay here. We also went to Blair Castle and saw two distilleries.
Our rooms were spacious and comfortable and the food was not too expensive though there was a lot of local game on the menu.
Very sweet small-town hotel
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here two nights and were quite pleased. While the decor is a bit out-dated, our room was comfortable, with a lovely four-poster bed, and the lounge was very pleasant. (Special props to the management for supplying the only decent toilet paper I used in Scotland!)
We enjoyed the meals there; they were not as over-the-top as some of the dinners we had at other hotels, which seemed to be trying to hard to be cosmopolitan. The staff was helpful and friendly.
A bit tatty
from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is described a 4 star on its website, but it is in fact a 3 star establishment. We paid extra for a "superior" room which was very cramped and smelled of damp. Bathroom could have done with a refurb. We had a look at some of the other rooms the next day and most of them were a bit better. Staff were friendly & helpful, food was no better than OK. There was an excellent resident's bar complete with a roaring log fire.
