Dunhuang - The Gobi Desert
... no cranes dotting the skyline. It's the Gobi Desert and snow capped mountains hover on the horizon. It is a long way and it feels a million miles from Beijing and the eastern cities.
From my hotel there are wonderful views of the dunes, known locally as The Singing Sand (Mingsha) Mountains. Up close they are an impressive sight. It is a popular tourist spot, with camel rides and paragliding.

Stop over in the desert of Dunhuang
... a Quad (4 wheel bike) in the nearby sand dunes while watching the camels giving the Chinese tourists a ride to the crescent spring. Although the place was rather touristy (Chinese only though) it was an amazing feeling to end after a few days in part of the Gobi desert. The sunrise we were watching from the rooftop terrace of our hotel with a cool beer in hand (still enjoying every single one before entering Pakistan!).
