... Salvatore grows oranges, lemons, figs and onions and we were sent off with a bag of these when we left the next morning..... lovely hospitality. From what we saw, Calabria is like the South Coast in the 80s: sugar cane growing on the side of the road, sea sand on the road, low ugly architecture. In fairness, we didn't go to the beach, but of all the places in Italy, I wouldn't rush back there as I find it ...

Mammola day 2

... cemetery. Nek minit he offered to show us around the commune building. He had his granddaughter with him who seemed fascinated with our accents. He took us into large offices and gave us booklets on various aspects of Mammola. When we arrived near Le Canella we took a wrong turn which we thought was right and headed up into the hills. ...

Ostuni

... lemon tea with milk. Italians make magnificent coffee but tea is a foreign concept. We decided to venture into Ostuni 8 kms away. We had a vision of a small town like Yandina. Think again! It was hectic, busy and parking a logistically nightmare. I used my sign language to ask a shopkeeper if we could park on the street. Not where we were, so she helped us find a park and pointed to the ticket machine. Blue lines you pay, white are free and yellow are ...
