What an amazingly smooth trip getting to my new home! Well rested after having an entire row to myself on the plane, I flew through customs and was met by a driver the school hired. "Let me," he said as I started helping load my bags in the car. I'd heard that August is a slow month in Rome, that most people get away for holidays at this time. But, today, even my driver was surprised by ...

... and both dosed off while laying on the bench. Then it was off to our tour of the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel and St. Peters' Basilica. The history of the Vatican City was extremely interesting, even for a not so history buff like Sam. Vatican City is its own sovereign country and we needed our passports in order to get through security. Unfortunately St. Peter's Basilica was closed because the Pope was doing a special service for peace ...

... in the Sistine Chapel you can't speak. You also have to cover your shoulders and knees (which is why you will find a picture of me in my granny shawl) and you cannot take pictures. This is pretty standard for all the churches here and is to show respect. The paintings on the ceiling really aren't given justice in books, but in real life are so detailed it is hard to focus. Pros and cons, right? The only problem we had was that they let too ...
