Dubai

After 5 weeks at home and shipping 68 boxes to Oz and also hooking up with 68 friends and associated offspring we finally leave for Oz amid many tears from me. (And in the months of this whole trip since March, 6 new people arrived in our realm so we say congrats to the parents of: Jasmine P-E, Rebecca C, Daria Ross, Alex F, Coco D & Louis A (pronounced Louie)).

7.5 hour flight to Dubai ok apart from screaming demon child who deserves an asbo (you could see people all around slowl...

New start up in Dubai

We arrived in Dubai, at the Hyatt about 3 AM, after finding our luggage had been lost. It was pointless to go to sleep since our meetings started at 7:30. So I stayed up, after getting cleaned up. I had a clean change of clothes, but only jeans for pants. Two of the team members came the day before, so we all hooked up for breakfast, then off to see the customer. It turned out the customer told the guys in suits to come back more casual tomorrow. So I guess my jeans were ok, just not preferre...

Time off to see the sights

Three of us bought a tour ticket. It consisted of a bus ride with stops at the malls and beaches. We stopped at the beach that cost Dh5 ($1). We found out quickly that cameras are not allowed on the beach! The park around the beach was beautiful. Along the way we saw the Emirate housing areas along the beach. As well as housing for ex-pats. Many mosques and malls, that we didn't gett off the bus for. The public beach was free, but no restrooms or concessions. It did have a great view of the B...

Dubai and the Palm Island

Once in Dubai, we went out to the Palm Island. Amazing. Each frond is lined with luxury homes. The trunk is loaded with apartments and condos. There are 35 hotels on the island. The monorail will travel up the trunk, to the end. Atlantis is a huge resort. We only saw a small portion, mostly lobby areas, where the gigantic aquarium is located. Some rooms have walls made of the aquarium. These run quite high (a couple k per nite). John & I had lunch outside. I returned here my last free day...

my third trip to Dubai

This is my third trip to Dubai. We were all excited to be able to ride on an A380 (Emirates). We arrived at our hotel around 2am. After resting, all the guys wanted to do was go to the mall! Well there are a lot of huge malls in Dubai, but shopping is not one of my favorite things to do. We did discover that the skiing is very affordable, so when we got Wednesday off from meetings, guess what the guys did! I, on the other hand, do not ski. I did make it to the spice souks and scored some saff...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Dubai Grand Hotel

Great service and very friendly

from Nippyboy
Well I usually speak as I find, and on this trip I found the Grand Hyatt to be excellent. My partner had never been out of Europe before, so I hoped the hotel and staff would be top quality, I was'nt disappointed, the rooms were fantastic, all marble and mahogony as you would expect to find in a 5* Dubai hotel. My partner was so impressed with the staff (me too!) that we decided to use this hotel again for a stay later this year, the staff made this trip so worthwhile, friendly, attentive, and actually made you feel welcome. The pool service was a little slow, but I thought there were not enough staff here at busy times, a shame because the hotel just brims with cleaners etc, all looking after this wonderful hotel

Faultless

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just stopped at the Grand Hyatt for 3 days with my wife. Really can't understand the criticism of the staff in previous reviews. Service was superb. Plenty of staff, all polite & helpful. Excellent facilities. With all it's conference facilities, I think plenty of the guests are kept busy during the day leaving the pools & spa very peaceful & relaxing.

Rooms were spacious and well equipped. Very handy for the city and away from the building on the coast. The coast is only a 10 minute £4 taxi ride away. Well placed for shops & restaurants at Wafi City and lovely views of the city & creek. Only ate in one night at Indochine which was a little pricy but top quality.

Have to agree with comments about staff

from NoneNixNada
The hotel really is actually very nice. Big rooms. Great common areas. But I have to agree with some of the various other comments posted on the quality of the staff. I liked the comment that the staff look right through you. That about sums it up. No matter where you are (e.g. checking-in, at the restaurants, at the pool, checking-out, etc.), there always seems to be a large number of staff milling about, all doing their best not to help you. Definitely not what you would expect from a 5* Grand Hyatt. Especially in a country with some of the finest hotels and the best service in the world. For me, the staff make the hotel, no matter how nice the rooms are. As such, I can only give this hotel a 2 rank.

Not sure

from Stuarttaylor
Stayed for 1 week on a business trip in Jan 2004, not long after it opened I believe.

Very impressive interior and rooms, In fact the room was faultless - huge bed, huge bathroom, great freebies and fruit bowl etc etc. Easy to use internet access. Quality AC and TV. Great for the business traveller.

I visited 4 of the restaurants, including breakfast, and my impression was that there were too many staff but they didnt know what they were supposed to be doing, for example breakfast each day was a battle just to keep things on your table, every time you turned your back a waitress would be over clearing things away. Poor training in my opinion.

In saying that, the food quality was excellent. The Singapore restaurant was good if over-priced. The Italian restaurant was good but the wine prices ridiculous.

I would stay there again, if only to see if the staff had been better trained.

Very bad service - throughout the hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel looks great - and indeed rooms etc are 5* standard. However, we stayed for 4 nights are were shocked at the poor service values - the worst I have ever experienced at a 5* hotel.

From check in - rude / surly - when we asked her why she was so unpleasent to us (as we had done nothing) she gruffly replied that she was tired. This attitude pervaded the entire hotel. They do not anticipate your needs, they see through you, you will really be made to feel unwelcome. Impossible to get a drink / food served around the pool - there was a stated waiting time of one hour for service. Room service took 50 minutes. Incompetent and slow staff at thw club floor lounge. To give them the benefit of the doubt - I do not think that the staff are being deliberately difficult, they are probably overworked and severely under trained. It ruined our stay and I am shocked that the Hyatt can get away with this appalling level of service in a country renowned for good service. Avoid this hotel at all costs. There are much much better alternatives.

Great gym!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here for a week on business (for me), vacation (for my wife!). Exceeds our expectation for a 5* hotel in Dubai. Dubai has high standards and so this is praise indeed. Here during Ramadan, so usual conditions apply. A few minor glitches - e.g information on opening hours of hotel restaurants was incorrect. Ate at 2 of the restaurants in the hotel - the Sushi bar and the Manhattan grill. Both were above average for a typical 5* hotel in this area. The Gym is one of the best I've ever used in hotels. The outside areas are excellent. It's now our preferred Dubai hotel for business or pleasure.

A good 5* hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Excellent hotel, well looked after etc etc, but staff have no knowledge of what is around them. eg- If you ask them where can I confirm my return flight, the answer was go to airport. you can actually do this in the hotel.

sit down for breakfast and get no service (tea/ coffee, etc.)

Ask for no smoking room and you gessed it.

Ask for change of pillows to non-feather ones and they only bring two

(there were 4 on the bed).

We were spoilt rotten!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed the one night at this excellent hotel in August, we booked on-line and booked to stay in an Emiri Suite. Imagine our surprise and delight upon arriving at the hotel to discover that we had been upgraded to a Princes Suite which was sheer luxury!!! It had to be experienced to be believed!!!

Dined in the hotel in their Singaporean restaurant, food and service both superb. A wonderful hotel and the foyer is stunning. Excellent pool and facilities, service and staff! I could go on and on!!!

Would recommend this hotel to everyone!

Wonderfull experience

from abualison1157
arrived on the 19 july, the hotel is immaculate, all the mod cons, check out the spa its wonderfull, and the indoor pool with soft music playing for relaxation. The staff could not have been more helpfull, service is top notch, we ate in the market terrace buffet style most nights ,a member of staff called Summit was very helpfull making our mealtimes a pleasent experience. rooms very tastefully furnished with lovely bathrooms. would go and stay there again.

Don't go to the Grill restaurant

from Meghdadi
Had a terrible experience. The food isn't good. The service is even worse. They poured water on the table and didn't even appologize. It took them 10 - 15 minutes to dry the table!!!!

The food quality we got for Dhs 1000 is just the same as what you can get for maximum Dhs 200 in any normal city restaurant.

If you really want good meat I can easily suggest the "Rib Room" in Emirates Towers instead for less than half the price and much better service and food.
