... about 10 miles from Verbier, a well-known skiing area. As usual it took a ridiculously large amount of effort to get somewhere to sleep. No surprise that there was no-one in the religious house. No campsite here so I went berserk and booked into the only B and B. There something about being soaked and cold that just puts me off wild camping. Nice dinner was a bonus. Could sort of justify both by the big climb tomorrow up to the Italian border at the Great St Bernard's ...
Well the forecast wasn't wrong. Rained periodically all day. Shame because the views would have been superb judging from the glimpses I got through the clouds. Started off by going via the train station as a shop there was the only one open. Switzerland just stays closed on Sundays. Relatively easy day but both religious places were not available so campsite again. But they had a dormitory for the same ...
... We caught the cogwheel train to the top of the Gornergart which is a 3000 meters mountain which gives us great views of the alps. The views of the alps were stunning. We got so near to them that they almost seemed touching distance. Lots of photos were duly taken.
We reached down about 7 pm and then immediately headed to a chocolatier to try out a selection of his finest swiss ...
... After a couple photos we quickly got onto the business of descending as my body temperature was falling quickly. After 40 minutes or so we were back on the valley floor. What a wonderful way to spend the day.
Julie researched places for dinner tonight and found a truly special restaurant. It was a cave within Old Sion. The inside of the cave was covering in stone and seated around 6 tables. We ordered deer/beef fondue Bacchus and a bottle of local wine. Sorry Bambi ...
