Tres bien...

Drove down from Dover and pulled in at the Relais Beaucoeron Hotel and restaurant which is actually an upmarket truck stop. 10E for the nigh unless you dine in and then camping is free.

What value...for the grand total of 13E pp we were treated to a three course meal ...
Chartres, Centre, France paddyandmandy... and vegetables.
After the main meal we got a variety of cheeses: potent Roquefort, amazing Brie from a farm that Helen accounts for, and a few other choices all on local baguette, and they serve it with butter to add to your cholesterol count. For dessert a Courchavel cake made with raspberries and crepes(we've never seen anything like it), then topped the meal off with espresso. During the meal we had 3 rounds of ...
Houdan, Île-de-France, France sasaharty... relaxed and laid back. The Cathedral is definitely worth the visit, and gives a wonderful insight into the life of the people there in the Middle Ages. Whether you are religious or not, to stand in the centre of the church and to look around at all the sculpture and stained glass windows around you, you can’t help but marvel at the skill of the craftsmen who built it, and at the way that the building captures you attention.

After Chartres we drove slowly down to ...
Chartres, Centre, France jaq123... waiting nearly a week to hear from the garage exactly what is wrong with the car - the AA Euro breakdown cover have been liaising with them & put us up in a hotel for a couple of nights before we had to move on. The garage are saying that there's 6,000 euros (£5,116) worth of damage which means my insurance won't pay for the repairs - I only paid £2,350 for it in the first ...
Chartres, Centre, France saria88Once again I was away by 07:30 in a heavy fog that caused me to be grateful for the excellent lights on my bicycle. I shunned the scenic route - nothing to see! - and took a direct route that left the GPS totally confused as it tracked my progress across a completely blank screen: a new road had opened recently so was unknown to the software. But I trusted my map and guidance from a young man waiting at a bus stop and pushed on, with a brand new motorway to my right. (Drivers of ...
Chartres, Centre, France jamie_pete... to blend modern with old town centre architecture, most notably its impressive clock tower. My hotel for the night was equally unremarkable yet provided an amazingly comfortable bed. That evening I strolled through a very quiet town centre and ate in the trendy 'Market Pub' (While the UK long ago borrowed the terms 'bistro' and 'brasserie' the term 'pub' seems to be a recent trend in France). DISTANCE FOR THE DAY: 100 km TOTAL SO FAR: 376 km
Dreux, Centre, France jamie_pete... in towns today The cathedral has three large rose windows: one on the west front with a theme of The Last Judgment, one on the north transept with a theme of the Glorification of the Virgin, and one on the south transept with a theme of the Glorification of Christ. Statistics length: 130 m width: 32/46 m nave: height 37 meters; width 16.4 m Ground ...
Chartres, Centre, France amygz... the assistant checked if they were both for today. I only wanted 1 for today and she gave me one ripe one and another that would keep. The unripe one she put in a paper bag so I knew which was which. How different from Sainsburys et al. They charge a premium for 'specially ripened',then they put 2 of them in a load of nasty plastic, so the second is overripe before you get to it. But don't get me started on the state of British food ... Pont-Audemer ...
Chartres, France born2bongo... check out our Shutterfly site. The labyrinth at Chartres is the best preserved and largest from medieval times, dating from around 1200. We spent a lot of time in the Cathedral then walked through town a bit. We grabbed lunch at a faux English pub. Here in Chartres carbonara is served with the egg on the side, IN THE SHELL, for you to crack into your pasta (sorry, we're obsessed with ...
Chartres, France marj70... sat down and had French Chinese, woohooo!!! It was good, but I'm not sure if I like it better than our American Chinese, go figure, but it was definitely very filling. Afterwards we just walked around a little more before going back to Paris, but we saw something for some reason I never thought to see in a normal store, Ducks and rabbits hanging upside down with their fur and feathers still intact, but their heads were wrapped in aluminum foil and I don't know why. Hmmm questions to ponder.
