Red Beaches and White Churches

After an uneventful yet smooth nine hour trip aboard a Blue Star Ferry from Rhodes, the city lights atop the caldera (bay) came into view from my boat's deck and I knew my week-long vacation on Santorini was about to begin.

My first impressions of the island (known as Thira to Greeks) were made in the darkness of midnight as my taxi driver traveled the winding switchback road from the port to the top of the cliffs overlooking the caldera and then sped along at 100km (in a 30km zone) th...

Exploring the island

... We were headed for the ancient ruins of Thira. We couldn't get in because it closes at 2.30pm each day and we were half an hour past that time. It looked worthy of another visit so we decided to come back the next day.

We drove back down the mountain then along the beachfront at Kamari, noting the numerous trendy bars (all closed) and cafes (all closed bar 3 or 4). We continued along the waterfront for as long as we could until the road diverted us back inland. It ...

... because we walked slowly, took breaks and lots of photos. At times the route is on a cobbled path and at times it’s just a goat track. It climbs up and down and skirts the cliff edge at all times. It really is something to experience. Along the route are dotted a series of picture-perfect chapels. I was disappointed to find them locked though.

Although the walk is only 12 km, its climbs and descents make it very challenging, at least for us and we were completely buggered ...

Slow boat to Santorini

... 8217;t choose this destination for a shopping experience (we could have stayed in Dubai for that!) But even with closed shops (about a quarter of them are open) it is a romantic and alluring place to be.

Based on our host’s advice about the best gyros in town we had a sumptuous meal by the main square in the cool night air, then headed back to our apartment for a turn in the jacuzzi before heading to bed. We had a big day planned for the next day.

Santorini day 1

... We dropped off our luggage in our room and took a walk along the beach. We decided to eat dinner at the restaurant right in front of our hostel and were rewarded with two rounds of free wine! After dinner we had a few more drinks at the hostel bar and (most of us) got to bed at a decent hour.

Seasickness blahhhhhh

... Youth Hostel and was so greatful I didn't have to arrange transportation, they had a little bus to pick up people just arriving. They let me just lay down in the backseat! Two other people came along, Erin and Connel both from Australia, the latter ending up being one my 4 roommates. As much as I wanted to chat and be friendly, I just couldn't do it! As soon as we got to the hostel I went straight to bed and had a lay down for a few hours. I dragged myself up about ...

Magical Sunset.

... p

We had our dinner onboard the boat. The dinner wasn't that good. It's buffet style, with no tables, and drinks are extra... But the sunset view are magnificent! The sun slowly disappear into horizon, and the colour of the sky slowly change from blue to yellow, to total darkness, till the only light you see are the lights from the caldera.

Touring Santorini

... we were surrounded by bags with Canadian flags. I think Canada could stage a take over of the Greek Islands via backpackers right now. They'd never see it coming! one night there partying, the next... domination! Too bad Canadians are too polite eh? Our overnight ferry was... fun. It was loud, with this random banging noise that would start out of nowhere for extended periods of time before it would stop... for about 2min ...

Santorini, here we come!!

... thought we could save a little by renting a scooter. So, to make sure I still know how to ride a bike, I gave it a try. I let Ai Ling wait, while I ride for a short distance. It's kinda uncontrollable for me, scary scary. A couple saw the way I ride, and told Ai Ling they don't think it's safe, doh! Ok ok... I must admit I myself don't feel confident of riding around ...
