Drossos Perissa

... We were headed for the ancient ruins of Thira. We couldn't get in because it closes at 2.30pm each day and we were half an hour past that time. It looked worthy of another visit so we decided to come back the next day.

We drove back down the mountain then along the beachfront at Kamari, noting the numerous trendy bars (all closed) and cafes (all closed bar 3 or 4). We continued along the waterfront for as long as we could until the road diverted us back inland. It ...

... because we walked slowly, took breaks and lots of photos. At times the route is on a cobbled path and at times it’s just a goat track. It climbs up and down and skirts the cliff edge at all times. It really is something to experience. Along the route are dotted a series of picture-perfect chapels. I was disappointed to find them locked though.

Although the walk is only 12 km, its climbs and descents make it very challenging, at least for us and we were completely buggered ...

... 8217;t choose this destination for a shopping experience (we could have stayed in Dubai for that!) But even with closed shops (about a quarter of them are open) it is a romantic and alluring place to be.

Based on our host’s advice about the best gyros in town we had a sumptuous meal by the main square in the cool night air, then headed back to our apartment for a turn in the jacuzzi before heading to bed. We had a big day planned for the next day.

... We dropped off our luggage in our room and took a walk along the beach. We decided to eat dinner at the restaurant right in front of our hostel and were rewarded with two rounds of free wine! After dinner we had a few more drinks at the hostel bar and (most of us) got to bed at a decent hour.

... Youth Hostel and was so greatful I didn't have to arrange transportation, they had a little bus to pick up people just arriving. They let me just lay down in the backseat! Two other people came along, Erin and Connel both from Australia, the latter ending up being one my 4 roommates. As much as I wanted to chat and be friendly, I just couldn't do it! As soon as we got to the hostel I went straight to bed and had a lay down for a few hours. I dragged myself up about ...
