A couple of days go we braced ourselves in readiness for the impending trauma of travelling on the overnight train. True – it was a bit rubbish but it lived up (or down) to all the hype. It was what it was – nothing more – nothing less. Today's bus trip was in a different league. We knew from the outset that it might be 6 hours but that was reduced to possibly 5 when we looked the route options. What we ...

And onto Wuyuan. A small town by Chinese standards - about 300,000 people. Its about 400km south east of Wuhan, or should I say a six hour bus ride. It's set in a hilly area of China and was my chance to see a bit of the countryside as scattered around the city are lots of old Huizhou villages where the traditional rural life still goes on. ... only $40, very far, only private cars, no taxis". Yeah right. Finally I figured that if I walked up the hill from the dock to the main road I could catch a bus to the city and then get a taxi for $2 to the station. So, as soon as we docked, I was off to get my bus and taxi to catch the train at 5.30pm (I had 3 hours). Then I got lucky. Whilst waiting for the bus a local told me he was also going into town on the ...

... was so that we could see the beautiful scenery between Wuhan and Chongqing. But it wasn't too bad as we got to spend the day in Wuhan, a city I'd wanted to visit for ages and which is actually quite attractive. It was also steaming hot, and humid as a Swedish sauna. Luckily my friend knew some famous sites in Wuhan so we set off and checked them out. First of all, we went to eat breakfast... Chinese street noodles, spicy and all sorts of herbs, ...
