Historical Traveler Reviews of Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel New York City
Very good value!

Just got back (June, 2003) and, bottom line, would stay here again. We were there for a whole week. Negatives: After pre-paying our room and confirming twice, they still gave it away when we got there late. On the plus side: They upgraded us at no charge to a suite for one night.
Restaurant charges $16+ for breakfast and $13+ for a hamburger! Best bet: Walk one block north to the Oxford and Willy will give you the best service in town on a complete breakfast for less than $4.00! He's quite a character. Positives: Close subway station, great gym, great locale, clean bathroom, comfortable beds. 4 FAST elevators (never had to wait more than 30 seconds). DOUBLE windows to hold down the noise.
We did stay on the side opposite the fire station but it never kept us awake. I think they only use the sirens during the day out of respect for the hotels in the area. Go for it! Hard to find better for the price.
Just tolerable

my wife and i stayed here recently (may 2003)the hotel rooms are in need of some major decoration as it appears to be quite dated,we had a room on the 7th floor, which overlooked the fire and police stations, and was quite noisy at all hours of the night and day (maybe if booking online the rooms are all block allocated,ie facing the fire and police station) the window would not stay open, unless something was jammed under it,the porters were less than helpful,as we had to struggle with quite large and heavy cases while he stood with his back to the wall watching us,however the location of the hotel is good for trains and shopping areas
Why so negative?

After reading all the horror stories below, I was a little worried about what to expect. The hotel was fine, a standard tourist hotel. I paid $145 for a decent-sized room with a king bed. The bathroom wasn't huge, but I didn't expect it to be. There was a separate area for the sink/mirror. Service was fine, location was great. My only complaint was the lack of a "Do Not Disturb" sign to hang on the door.
Anywhere but here

Remarkably underwhelming, unless the fusillade of Delta Airlines pilots in the lobby or rows of New Yorkers on treadmills--as seen from guest room windows across the street--constitute ambience. This thoroughly anodyne hotel manages to sustain the lacklustre corporate experience through the lobby all the way to the rooms. Guest rooms are relatively well maintained, but faded. This should only be a last resort hotel, since there are multiple far more satisfying alternatives in this price range. If the Metropolitan was anywhere but NYC then maybe it might be eligible for a recommendation based on the lack of nasty surprises, but it isn?t, so there's no excuse for the hotel embracing mediocrity in quite such an unfettered manner.
Excellent location

After reading all the bad reviews on this site, I wasn't sure if I was looking forward to my stay here. But the room was big, clean and comfortable. The staff were all very helpful and pleasant. The location couldn't be better for sightseeing and shopping (subway is right outside). My husband and I had a wonderful stay, and would certainly recommend the hotel. OK, so it isn't the Waldorf-Astoria, but it is excellent value for the area. Who goes to New York to sit around the hotel all day anyway?
Sad 1960's hotel

Stayed at the Metropolitan when I couldn't get a room anywhere else in the city. The rooms are very small and crowded. The lobby has recently
been changed to a pseudo art deco look. Much of
the lobby space has been converted to squeeze in
a restaurant. Check-ins and check outs are difficult
in this small lobby. Everything I experienced at this
hotel was second rate and worn out. Location is right down the street from the Waldorf Astoria;
you really couldn't have a better location. Location
and a subway stop at the door; both most convenient. Everything else however was a disappointment.

Just stayed here (Nov 15-17, 2002)I cannot belive this place! and let me tell you why...
1. Air control in room was a trash can to keep broken window open to cool the sauna, err...my room.
2. Call to get someone to fix heat...they never came.
3. Dirty bathroom floor tile grout (cleaned circa 1985)
4. Beds of such terrible quality I can hardly believe they are still in use.
5. Trughtfully, I did like the friendly and helpful concierge staff.
6. As well the opereators were nice on the phone.
7. The rest of the staff...plflflflf please.
8. I could go on but you get the point.
TRY SOMEPLACE ELSE!
Not tops, but good

My wife, my infant son and I stayed here in September 02 and were very pleased with our experience. We took heed of the fire station accross the street and asked for a quiet room. We were given a room with a view of the air conditioning system, but it was indeed quiet and comfortable. Things were also clean although worn - left over from the days this was a Loews hotel. Staff was extremely friendly and was prompt when we asked for a crib/play-pen. Location was excellent and price was very good for the area. I have recommended this hotel to friends and would stay there again. The hotel was very busy the week were there because of a tennis tournament in town but things still went very smoothly. The only reason this isn't a top hotel is because it and it's furnishings are aging a bit and beginning to show wear and tear - otherwise very nice!
Noisy and Dirty

Don't stay on the side facing the fire station & police station.... two of the worst things to have outside of ones window in NY. But, it is a very safe area!
The lobby is nice, but the room felt dirty. YUCK!

The Metropolitan Hotel has got to be the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. After having our flight delayed into New York by a severe thunderstorm; we arrived at the hotel only to find out that the Nonsmoking room with the King size bed we requested was not available. Even though we called several times that day to confirm our room requirements. The manager informed us that "you can make request all you want but, that doesn't mean you will get it". so, we get to our smoking room with a full size bed to find out that the room was in poor condition. The floors were dirty and damp, the room was extremely small, it was approximate 2 feet from the end of the bed to the wall. The service was poor and the staff was extremely rude also, we had a fabulous view of an alley. We ended up checking out of the hotel, losing our two day deposit, and checking into the Hilton which was outstanding definitely a four/five star hotel!!!.
