Island Hopping

A travel blog entry by unplugged

It has been years since I Ann and I have been to the Islands, so we decided to stay for two weeks. The first week will be on the Big Island of Hawaii and the second week will be on Kona.

The bad news - is that we have a conference to attend the first week, so we will have to blend our enjoyment of the island with a little work.

The good news - work or no work we anticipate having a great time and we do have one week to just play.

... if stinky, from the seals) and the San Diego Zoo was a pretty good zoo, although I think I'm partial to the Singapore Zoo.

We stopped in La Jolla for fish tacos too. You know, here is the thing about a thing like fish tacos. Props to baja and San Diego for popularizing them, but twenty years after the fact, it's not really a big deal anymore. There are a lot of places that sell delicious fish tacos now, in ...

4,600 miles driven and I pulled into San Diego Saturday afternoon. Greg and I wanted to go sightseeing right away. So first stop was Cabrillo National Monument and Tide Pools on Loma Point. Captain Cabrillo was the first European to set foot on the Pacific coast of America. We walked down to the tide pools where tide comes up and in the pools there is tons of life. Tiny crabs and fish ...

... end of the day he was telling everyone how Brave he was for going on it.

There was so much to see and do at Sea World that before we knew it, it was 6pm and the park was closing. The kids said they enjoyed the day more than either of the days at Disneyland!!!! So it was well worth the visit. The adults found it a much more enjoyable day also. Maybe it was the smaller crowd or maybe it was a more relaxed atmosphere, but whatever it was it was ...

Good Hotel, Good value, good location

    from KS69

I stayed there about a month ago and i liked it very much. The rooms are nice and big, decent bathroom with good amenities. The gym was small but pretty clean. The pools were nice and large.

My only complaint was that it was a bit far from anything but hey. i got it off of priceline so i cant complain too much.

The other peoples complaints about not having "kiddie" playrooms or whatever are stupid. Honestly, if you travel with kids, dont stay at a business hotel! Find a motel 6 next to a mcdonalds.

    Enjoyable stay

    from smetlogik

We stayed at the Doubletree Oct 16 & 17. Hotel was clean, reasonable price, friendly staff, and the rooms were comfortable and clean. Only downside was the parking garage. Kind of a strange layout, but other than that, a good hotel for being on the circle. Would stay there again.

    It was great

    from anonymous

I stayed there in July and I was very impressed. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The rooms were very big and clean. I'd stay there again in a heart beat.

    3 Star Hotel With Caution

    from anonymous

Has the typical amenties of a 3 Star hotel with pool, restaurant, gift shop, etc. Very clean, and free parking. However, there is no child playroom contrary to the advertisements; and room service is the most expensive with the smallest food portions we have ever experienced. Also, there is new hotel being built next door which can be noisy in the morning.

    Great for kids!

    from anonymous

After reading many reviews, we decided to stay here for our family vacation to the San Diego area. Our two kids ages 3 and 5 absolutely loved the swimming pools. The kids wading pool has a zero entry side for toddlers. The entire pool area has recently been renovated and is neat, clean, and beautifully landscaped. Only downside is that the traffic noise from the adjacent freeway was a little to loud in the pool area for me. Another great point for families is the strip mall 2 blocks away with groceries and various reataurants, fast food, etc. Del Mar area is ten minutes from Legoland and 15 minutes from SeaWorld. No traffic problems. Room was very nice and clean. The hotel was sold out on the Saturday night we arrived and we ran into many locals. Both of those facts indicate a nice place for the money. Overall a great place for a business stay or family vacation. Too busy and noisy (freeway and nearby construction) for a romantic weekend.

Staff was quick to respond to all needs.

    New and Nice

    from ppilot

Stayed in 2004, beautiful hotel, free high speed internet, HBO, large room, I would not recommend it as a San Diego hotel because it is north and freeway traffic to town can be a problem, but it is great for DelMar and area.

    Good hotel. Expensive Breakfast.

    from ARK_Travelers

We stayed here the last weekend in Feb 2004.

This was a good hotel. Albeit far from the action, we got a great rate at the hotel for $72 per night for a double. It's California; you have to drive anyway!

Why not stay in a decent hotel which is nice. Watch out for the breakfast as it can get expensive. But this is located close to quite a few shops. The staff is quite friendly and courteous; they remembered our every need and were great with directions.

I'll stay here again if I have cause to be close to SD.

    Good Location!

    from frugalguy

Good location and above average hotel. Depending on the price you pay I guess your opinion may be altered. My wife and I payed less than $60 per night and were very pleased. Doubletree seems to be a great hotel chain for the price. Not as fancy as the Hilton, but a few steps ahead of Holiday Inn.

    Nice Experience!

    from anonymous

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in April, 2003. We found the room very clean, with a nice view and nicely appointed. We ate in the restaurant, and the food was reasonable and tasty. The staff was very willing to accomodate, including making our reservation for dinner at a restaurant the next night, giving us directions and a confirmation call. The only problem for me was the gift shop was closed all day Saturday till 6:00pm and when it did open, there was an oriental poprietor who spoke no English and could not answer any questions about any merchandise.

Parasite looking bugs in pool! Beware!!

    from anonymous

This hotel was a joke! First of all, the rooms are very small for the amount of money they charge. The signature cookie they give you is old and tastes like it had been sitting there for about a week. The pool had underwater living bugs all along the steps of the pool and a bunch and the bottom, I know for a fact because I had my goggles on and could see them walking around the bottom of the pool. The jacuzzi was not warmed at 11:00 a.m., I had to ask them to warm it up for me which took about 20 minutes when I was promised only 5. This hotel looks great from the outside but it's really absurd that they charge $130.00 a night for these cheap accomadations. You might as well stay at Motel 6 and save yourself some money.
