More Traveler Reviews of Dos Playas Cancun
Basic but beautiful
from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-02-03
we were at dos playas for a one-week all inclusive stay. we were satisfied with our room, great view, clean (enough), a/c worked well, shower was fine..although it constantly leaked all over no matter how you positioned the shower head. the grounds were well kept and the beaches nearby were also beautiful, and raked daily. the pool was small, but clean. we didn't use it, why would you when the ocean was so inviting. we considered the ocean to be clean and the sand as well. the food was good, although repetitive. we were able to make a meal of all the fresh fruit and chicken dishes. breakfast is the best meal of the day, with the freshly made omelettes the highlight. the staff was friendly. we tipped the bartenders and housekeeping staff adequately.
our bar service was good, however, we discovered the housekeeping staff was not changing our sheets daily, but we asked for fresh sheets at the front desk and received replacements promptly. overall, our experience at dos playas was a positive one. the price was reasonable. we have stayed at ***** hotels before and the experience was not as memorable or as personalized as this one. we would stay at this moderately priced hotel again.
Its ok

I stopped here in Sept 2002, and like most of the reviews we found the hotel a bit shabby, we did ask to be moved from the first room given and was moved to room with a seaview with complimentary chit chat, which was a lot nicer. The air conditioning kept breaking down and like the whole of cancun!!! the toilets did not flush propealy. The staff were excellent and we did eat there most nights even though only having room only. The place is also a good stagger from Fat Tuesdays.
Great place for the fun loving budget conscious

Dos Playas isn't the Ritz by any means. The people in some of the more negative reviews aren't really making things up but the rooms do differ quite a bit from building to building so experiences will tend to differ.
I'm the kind of guy who when I'm travelling I want to be out doing stuff as much as possible. I'm not hanging out in my hotel room much outside of sleeping so maybe I have a higher tolerance for minor annoyances. I've stayed in places that make Dos Playas look like a palace in some countries and even then I didn't let that ruin my trip.
I spent a week there and found my room to be adequate. There was some water that leaked on the floor occasionally but the shower was decent and a decent size room. It's true there's no remote for the TV but if you are watching TV in Cancun you are missing the point. The food was quite decent. Nothing shocking but a couple nights I was really digging it. Lots of fruit is available. If anything it suffers from some repetitiveness but it's all you can eat so you can be creative with the combinations you put together. There are other options and if you ask they will make things like burgers or club house sandwiches for about 25 pesos, hardly a steep price. The bar staff are awesome. They never once stopped smiling and I watched tons of people never tip em. I gave them $5 a day and got insane service and made great friends with them.
The beers and fruit drinks aren't particularily strong but they will make em strong if you request. The pool is fine really, you don't find gigantic pools outside of the high end resorts because you come to swim in the ocean generally. The entertainment staff are top notch. Willy and Taco will take you out partying every night and would usually be getting beach volleyball going for those who stuck around the place during the day. The beach is right beside Playa Tortugas so if there's anything you don't like about it (seemed fine to me) there's another 500m of beach right beside it. You have amenities right there too, docks with boats to Isla de la Mujeres, jet ski and kayak rentals and parasailing. Fat Tuesdays is right next door too so if you go on a Tuesday you are set for an easy night of partying.
In short the place isn't perfect but I found that the people who weren't enjoying it weren't going to be enjoying much on their holiday it seemed. It was an older crowd on the first day I arrived but by the end of the week it was all 20 somethings for the most part and we had a blast. It varies at every resort week to week the make up of the place.
It's a bit of a crap shoot that way. Next time I go back I will probably stay at Dos Playas again. I would just steer clear of it if you want everything to be perfect and your resort is going to make up 80% of your holiday or something.
Do Not Stay Here - Dos Problems Hotel !!!
from IH8VegasMan on 2004-01-26
The name of this hotel should be "Dos Problems Hotel".
DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT SPENDING YOUR MONEY TO STAY HERE, EVEN IF YOU THINK IT'S A GOOD DEAL!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!
I have travelled to many differnent places in the world and stayed in 5 Star Hotels to Bamboo Huts. This hotel, for the money we paid, was the worst.
The rooms and the building are run-down; a "Motel 6" is luxury compared to Dos Playas. Many things did not work like the toilet, ac, sliding door, shower door, lamp. Everything is old, stained, and dirty looking.
The repair personnel must be over-worked!
We booked and paid for an ocean-view-room but they did not have a room for us. We were forced to stay in a noisy standard room full of problems.
The management of this hotel should open there eyes to these problems or else they will go bankrupt. I would recomend all Tour Companies, like Sunquest, to pull this Hotel off of their list.
If you stay here you may save money, but be prepared to deal with many problems, stress, and wasted vacation time.
-5 Star ( This place is like going to Jail)

This has got to be the worst vacation ever. I did not want to be there from the moment I got there. I am so glad that I did not go to this place with my wife. Thank god I went with my friends. This hotel is like a run down motel. This place had a swimming pool the size of a backyard pool. There was no one in the pool at all times, I am not sure why. The washrooms were a disaster. None of the showers in the whole resort worked. The toilets were not flushing. Had to flush them like 4-5 times. People can see you while you shower from a little window. The ceiling fell on my friend s head while in the washroom. The TVs don't have remotes. The AC does not work. It is like a fan and does not blow cold air. The room doors were not secure at all. All of this, I guess this is all acceptable for a 2 star hotel. But what about everything else. The food was the worst food that I have every eaten in my life. They do not add flavour to any of the buffet food. The food tasted like water. But listen to this. If you pay and order from the menu, you get a completely different type of amazing Mexican food. All inclusive I don t think so.. Same goes for the Alcohol. The beer tasted like water and did not do any thing. The liqueurs taste so awful, that they make you want to throw up. The beach is really bad. There is so much seaweed all over the water. There are rocks under the water that will cut you feet. And the water must be so polluted from all the boats and small ships that are parked there. This resort offered no entertainment what so ever. Only thing that was offered was Beach volleyball. No activities in the pool beach gathering place, etc. My last trip to Cancun, I stayed at the Oasis, which was rated 3-½ star. Oasis was an amazing resort with so many thing to do and awesome food and drinks. Dos Playas is rated 3 star. I am not sure why Sun Wing Travel Company would rate this place a 3 star. This place is a dump. I completely blame Sun Wing for this bad experience that me and my 3 friends had to face. Prior to purchase Sun Wing advised us that this is pretty good place to stay and party in Cancun. That was so wrong of Sun Wing. This place consisted mainly of an older crowd (40 +). Nice place for Sun Wing to advise four 26 year olds to visit. Throughout out my stay I complained to the Sun Wing rep so many times to move us to a hotel where at least the food will be ok for a reasonable cost. He was not able to do anything for us. When I arrived back to Toronto, I was so sick from lack of eating. The only good thing about this resort is the two entertainment staff for the resort. They were the best. They were so helpful and kept us smiling. Thanks Bernado and Willie. In conclusion, all I can say is that stay away from this place. Personally I would not got to this place not even for $100 per week.
Not a bad deal
from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-01-06
We got a really cheap deal and knew not to expect the Hilton. It seems many people (like us) had to spend our first night in a small, run-down dungeon-like room. They upgraded us the next day and we never looked back. After that, we really enjoyed ourselves. The food is OK and the location is great. The staff, front desk people aside, were quite friendly (especially the restaurant people). If you can go for cheap, it is the best deal around. Besides, we heard lots of complaints from the people on our return flight who stayed in 4 and 5 star places.
One-two Star Hotel
from A TripAdvisor User on 2003-12-23
They do not always give you the promised wake-up call.
They do not pass on messages that your family or friends may have called and left on the hotel answering machine for you.
The maids do not change your sheets daily.
There is no elevator.
There is no bathroom fan.
They do not attach your wrist band securely in our -case 50% of the time, and they charge $100us for a replacement should you be so unlucky!
They will not call to confirm your ground transportation to the airport even when the bus is late and they all have desk phones (5 phones)...they just point to the telephone booth outside.
But it is very cheap and has a good location. The restaurant is very nice too.
So much for so very little

Cheap, Cheap, Cheap, are the operative words to descibe this place, much like building 19, cheap is in style, have been there maybe 7 or 8 times, but the place is small enough that the waitstaff always remembers what you want/like... no big box hotel ammenities here, just the basic stuff, room, food, pool, (quiet)beach, drinks, sand, and LOTS OF PEACE AND QUIET, close to the malls and to downtown, and close to the clubs, the rooms are fair, (please no high expectations), the pool is rather small, but hey if I really wanted to vacation in the middle of a busy shopping mall, I would have, but I don't want to...so I'll stay here.. I've been to Cancun about a dozen times, and have realized that unless you dole out HUGE MONEY you're only going to get average service, so why not save a few bucks, and hit Dos Playas, the best part of this hotel, is its price and location, sooooo if you want to:hear screaming kids, walk through a mall-like area to get to the pool, listen to 500 other people right near-by, absolutely have to have everything neat as a pin.....goto the ritz-carlton, I"m sure they have room for you........but if wanna save plenty-o-bucks, and you need QUIET, a small slice of beach, (without crowds), and you're happy with the most basic of accomodations, like me :-), and would rather spend your hard earned money on more important things.........then follow me.....to Dos Playas
Great service at a great price
from A TripAdvisor User on 2002-11-28
I found the staff very helpful and eager to please, the rooms are clean and great deal for the money. The grounds and flowers are spacious compared to the higher priced concrete jungles that make up most of the strip. With only 115 rooms the other tourist are more inclined to chat, I found alot of Germans, and South Americans when I stayed, all were very friendly. The hosts at the bar, Senior Jose', and his staff are very nice, will provide a quiet way to spend an evening in what is normally a loud town. The beds in most of Mexico and on the firm side so expect it even here. I really did not care too much for the food, kind of bland, but as I found out most of the local food is.
Depends on what you're looking for...

I stayed in that hotel in august 2001, and it aint' so confortable..... a/c broke- down one night, the swimming pool quite small and un-appealing, the food is not their best feature. But,for the price, it's ok. Anyway, if you're thinking about having a confy vacation, you'd like to pay a little bit more somewhere else.
