Well I finally made it! I am an official international traveler. I made it into Vancouver Airport at 8 pm and was ready for a 4 hour wait, when I saw that my flight was delayed 2.5 hours. As most of you know I go to bed early so waiting for a 2:30 AM flight was a challenge. I slept in the airport chairs in positions that I don't care to discuss. Once on the plane I was happy to see that my seat mate was a petite Thai lady who was already asleep by the time I sat down. I popped an oral sedativ...
Hong Kong, China chattynattyI survived my first night without freezing! Sooo glad there was a thick wool blanket in the closet. I had cranked the heat but I'm sure the thermostat on the wall is only for decoration. I had washed a few articles of clothing, including my long wool socks that I was sure could crawl on their own, but they hadn't even begun to dry yet. So you know me, I magivered the very large, ancient wall mounted blow drier provided to dry my socks. Thank heavens I awoke around 4 AM so that provided me wit...
Hong Kong, China chattynattyI know I had said that I would be in touch once in Thailand but I had to share with you the most amazing experience that I had. Yesterday, after writing my blog, I decided to go for some dinner. I chose an authentic Chinese restaurant down the road. I sat at a table sipping tea waiting for the dish that I had ordered ( I couldn't recognize many of the menu items). A family of 4 sat at the table next to me and they stared a lot. They asked the server, in chinese, about me as I over heard him t...

Chiu-lung, Hong Kong paveleHot and humid are the words I would use to describe Hong Kong (HK), besides the usual "urban-jungle" synonyms that we all know: busy, smog, neon lights, gargantuan concrete and glass skyscrapers, densely populated, etc. I quickly noticed that two HKs exist: one is the intricate city that is trying to balance a culture between the old and new; the other is a city that thrives as multinational corporations pump billions of dollars into the economy in the name of international trade, commerce, a...

... to a random island and ended up in paradise! Lamma Island, an Island with no cars, only one van which served as a fire truck! Deliveries were seemingly done by golf cart! We hiked across the nature trail of the island to get to a beach, stopping to buy swimming gear, ribena and digestive biscuits! We were deemed insane when we went swimming and splashed around on the white beach, but we had such a blast. It's so cool that you can go to Hong Kong and see the big city, and also ...

We also visited Western Market, a distinctive red Edwardian style building and walked up and down Wing Lok street, famous for dried seafood and birds nests. We returned on the train to the hotel, where we remained for the evening - two for one cocktails in the lobby bar then back to our suite.

They also have a noodle bar off to one side, where I just had a traditional breakfast of soup with wontons and noodles. (I fell asleep on the plane and missed breakfast, so needs must.) Louise, you would have been happy - they gave you chopsticks and a Chinese soup spoon, and woe betide the foolish traveller who ...
