Even if for only one damp and chilly night, we finally got to see another city in Bavaria. Nuremberg is mostly a bombed out shell of its former self, redone since the war with more modern style architecture but still retaining the city's original mapping. This means tons of streets that are pedestrian only, and for the most part, this is how we enjoyed the city – simply by walking its ...
... want to leave" type thing. Later, I found out that several of the group that were a little ahead of me were in the room when the smoke started to roll out of a wall, crazy huh? After we got kicked out, we went to the house of some artist I can’t remember the name of (but it was really cool) and took a tour guided by his "wife" (who is several hundred years old now). The lady impersonating his wife was very animated, always joking with us and giving advice to the boys about ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany ab10... later, you could lower your taxes if you redecorated in the baroque style covering up the timber. As a result you see both kinds of construction, sometimes on the same building. We went to the cathedral but it was not as impressive as others we’ve seen. However, it was built in the 11th century and houses the tombs of Emperor Henry II and Pope Clement II, the only Pope buried in Germany.
Walking through the cathedral square we came to the Old and New ...
Today, right after breakfast, we crossed the European Continental Divide. We went into a lock that dropped us down 81 ft. At the bottom it was, as our tour guide said, like being a spider in a bathtub with concrete walls rising up just inches from the sides of the ship.
We docked at ...
... good. We had potato pancakes with sauerkraut and sausages and it went really well with the beer.
Bamberg is awesome by the way. Lonely Planet described it as one of the best towns in Germany and we HIGHLY agree with that. Probably the best town in Germany (and that says a lot). There are a bunch of canals that run through the town and that are lined with old buildings and lots of bridges. It is definitely one of the most ...
... the game. First of all, the germans know how to cheer!!! An arena seating maybe 10000 with more cheering then a Habs game! Each player was announced and all the fans chanted their last name! They had intricate drumming and clapping cheers! It was really fun to get into even though we couldn’t always follow or understand! By the end we were swinging our scarves around and shouting the players names ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany ktchris... older feel to it. The center of the city is pretty small and can be walked around in an hour. Outside the walls is a very industrialized city which we didn’t take to much time to see. In every German city there is a Hauptmarkt. This is the town square where there are usually marlets and exhibitions going on. They were selling lots of fruits and veggies and handmade stuff. Its fun to see what each ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany ktchris... we grab a train back to Erlangen, and visit Kim where she works in a yoghurt bar. A nice hot soup is great after being outside all day in the cold, and then a refreshing frozen yoghurt is the logical finishing touch! As we stroll back towards Nick’s apartment, we stop to hear a men’s chorus singing more Christmas carols in the Erlangen Christmas market. I think by the time Christmas actually arrives, I’m going to be ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany robconr... A lentil soup with lots of little chucks of ham and small wursts. Went well with a Steinbach pilsner! (To see the other photos, open the album...) On the walk back I was greeted by a knight in shining armor, guarding a gothic-style building. Sunday afternoon is a time for taking walks (Spaziergang), and quite a few bring their dogs along, of course - one in particular reminded me of home!
Erlangen, Germany pfitech... It was a huge, beautiful place and had a magical big garden. Too think it was all for one lady is crazy as it was gigantic. I can't help how lonely you'd be in a place this big. However i wouldnt say no. Well from leaving this place :o( which is sad as its so peacefull and scenic and so far the prettiest place we've been too. This place is also the start of the Romantic Road for anyone interested in doing that - a great start i must add :o) Goodbye Wurzburg...
