Travelling day - Shangri La to Lijiang to Chengdu

... amp; cramped, it stoppped to let people on & off & people smoked & of course spat out the window frequently!! It wasn't too bad & passed quickly & the scenery was stunning. Past endless fields of corn ( no rice here), farmhouses & tibetan people in the fields & on the streets. Then it was downhill for ages as we descended the mountains - hairpin turn ...

Visit to the Ministry of Education

Today we had a meeting at the ministry of Education for the Sichuan Province. It was very interesting. We had a lecture on the reforms that are going on here in the Sichuan Province. Many of the reforms are similar to ours in the U,S, They also talked about the changes with English as a Foreign language. Years ago a teacher was told to teach English without being qualified or even able to speak much English. China does like having ...

Day 15: Kind of Exhausted

I stayed up rather late last night studying, not that I would have been able to go to sleep anyway because there was a loud party in the men's dorm across the street from us. On a Tuesday night? Really? At least they didn’t have loud music, but they were definitely being pretty loud. Even when I did go to bed it was still going on, though not quite as loudly. I slept badly, though, I think because the room was too hot and I’d stuffed my head a little too full of ...

Earthquake prediction comes true

... measures such as higher quality of construction, public education on surviving quakes, and rescue training. Protection against earthquakes was seen as a multi-faceted effort that should involve quake monitoring, prediction, injury and damage prevention, disaster rescue and relief, and post-quake reconstruction. "China's quake legislation is delivering. Research should catch up," CENC deputy director Zhang Xiaodong said in an interview. According to Zhang, there was progress ...

Quite Inside -- Sky Burial

... The corpse is offered to the vultures. It is believed that the vultures are Dakinis. Dakinis are the Tibetan equivalent of angels. In Tibetan, Dakini means "sky dancer". Dakinis will take the soul into the heavens, which is understood to be a windy place where souls await reincarnation into their next lives. This donation of human flesh to the vultures is considered virtuous because it saves the lives of small animals that the ...

Earthquake in Chengdu

Dear Friends and Family, as you all wake up to a Monday morning in the US, you will hear on the world news that there was an earthquake in Chengdu. It happened about 6 hours ago and we hear it measured 7.8 on the Richter scale. We are all fine. We were 5 floors up and waited for the swaying to stop and then ran down 5 flights of stairs to the outside. I did get some pictures that I will ...

Farewell, and all that

... the same god-awful song on repeat until it drove everyone out of the bar. The appearance of a TV and the English language channel CCTV-9 was momentarily a good compromise, until I realised how bad and frequently repeated most of the programming was. The self-congratulatory 'English speaking competition' must have been repeated in it's entirety at least once a month, and I still have nightmares where I'm chased by a giant bottle of green tea, yelling "Natural ingredients for a ...
