... to see mosques, and pretty soon there is one every few hundred metres: we are entering the territory of the Muslim Chinese, the Hui. Their capital Linxia, our overnight destination, is on the edge of the Tibetan plateau on the main road the Lhasa, and we start to see high mountains in the distance.

Our first motorway service station is memorable. Toilets are large and clean but exclusively of the squatting type, unless you care to go in public - ...

I found boxes of decaf sachets in the supermarket - the ones with whitener and sweetener added. I just bought one to see how they were. I discovered I could strain the milk powder and sugar out with the tea strainer and add my own milk – then they tasted quite good. They’re long gone now too. Alas when I went back to the supermarket they didn’t have any left. Now I duck into any supermarket I pass just in ...

... for the bride and a variety of suits for the groom for a two-day photo shoot a couple of weeks before the wedding. The wedding "package" included several high-quality leather bound albums (some 8x10, some 11x14), several framed photos, 4x6s for the guests, fancy invitations, a video and a large 8-foot poster all for roughly $1,500, including the cars.

The photos were shot in parks, on the beach or in a studio using backdrops that had them dressed in winter clothing on ...
