... the shiny 80’s tracksuits! When I was in Macau I thought there was a Brazilian team walking around until I realised that it was yet another glaringly bright uniform. But... I saw kids there in shirts and ties too. It’s something else I don’t actually know: maybe they’re from private schools, and maybe private schools aren’t so common on the mainland. Another thing to find out. I’ll be an expert by the time this is over.

So ...
Guangzhou, Guangdong, China marymc21... I’m not sure what a helper is so I don’t want to comment until I’m sure but if it’s what I think then it’s no wonder they’re so soft. The academic ability range in the classes is no different to what I’m used to but what is different is the attitude of the students. Before coming here I had some strange notion that I’d be teaching highly academic and motivated students who could seriously challenge my knowledge ...
Fanling, Hong Kong prbrown... and ‘with it’, aimed squarely at the i-phone generation and idolizing all I despise. Bells, whistles and coloured lights, designed to replace substance to a generation void of meaningful knowledge. I learnt how to make movies, podcasts, and music, add a garage band to my presentations and film an interview with another teacher; then instantly forgot everything. Some young, gay looking, Chinese guy was delivering the tutorial with admirable enthusiasm and ...
Fanling, Hong Kong prbrownThese lovely pictures are of the South China Normal University in Guangzhou, the capital of the Guangdong province. Guangzhou is 1.5 hours by bus from my town Qingyuan. It is a very large city of about 15 million people, but I have yet to feel overwhelmed or crowded by the people. It is very easy to travel around even with very weak Chinese as almost all public signs are in both English and Chinese and most young people speak at least a little English. I ...

The villa is still under construction currently.

Once we returned to Connie and Axu's apartment the topic of ...

It was situated in a high rise building which consisted of 70% local residents and the rest guesthouses. There doesn't seem to be a huge amount to do in Honkers unless you love to go shopping because shopping centres are everywhere! ...maybe too many? Well they all have air con so that is ...
Hong Kong, China kymtam... and the teachers still have any grip on their sanity at all. Definitely not cricket. I'm discovering this quaint piece of sweatshop-style schooling first hand, now that I have agreed to do an evening class for a group of senior school students. They're actually pretty good (so far). I am constantly amazed that these 16-18 year olds don't start screaming for no reason, don't try and hit my bum or hug my legs, and don't play tiggy around the desks or set ...
Dongguan, China oliviaboyd... don't. I just have to look myself in the mirror and know that I didn't hurt someone who didn't deserve to get hurt. This aversion to collateral damage might be why I don't want to win the big game of big business, but I'm really not sure I want to be playing it at all in China or anywhere else even though I'm on a winning streak in the environment I'm in. It's more fun to have the freedom to hit that last ball for six!
