***This entry isn't about the delicious foods we had for brunch, but it's about my family. I haven't seen them for nearly 8 years, and every one of them sacrificed their long weekend to entertain Dana and me. They took care of every little detail of our stay, and planned a fantastic weekend for us. This was not only a great way to start our trip, but also reminded me how lucky I am to have them.***
Uncle Jason took us to the airport after we ...
... of it, but it was meant to be the most luxurious hotel in the world when it opened in a few short months. Apparently some of the fireworks from the New Year celebration of the building next door didn't go off properly and fell on the roof of the unfinished hotel where it landed on oxygen canisters used in the construction. The building was engulfed before fire crews arrived, and completely gutted before the sun rose. It was a surreal sight, and you could still ...
Beijing, China aszliross... park with temples, islands, boating, and locals practising their opera....fantastic. Wednesday was spent changing accommodation and at the post office....very dull...but very necessary. Thursday was the big day....."The Great Wall" and it didn't disappoint!! We had a great day with great people (Keith, Nir, Thomas. Tanya, George and guide Jennifer) which will live long in the memory. The 10 kilometre hike along the wall between Jinshaling ...
Beijing, China natgordon... Wall It is hard to put in to words what a sight it is, it is absolutley incredible. I still do not understand how you fathom tp build such a thing. To call it great is an undestatement and a wall seems silly. It is something i have always wanted to see and it didnt disappoint, if you are ever in beijing you have to go and once you do you will understand why. I decided to do the hike for four hours for the Great wall as it meant you got to see alot of ...
Beijing, China heinz82... is that I should have been traveling from here to Mongolia by train. Because of the Olympics the company couldn't reserve a train ticket in China for any dates in June, and now I have to fly there. To begin with I was a bit miffed, but it's given me an extra day in Beijing and the Chinese/Mongolian border crossing sounds a nightmare. They've probably done me a favour. Security in China has been tightened up because of the Olympics. The Ministry of ...
Beijing, China jonnymatthews... clean and well maintained. It is China's showcase, and they seem to be quite serious about it. Of course, they are in gear for the Summer Olympics in August. The heart of Beijing is Tiananmen Square, surrounded by The Forbidden City, The Great Hall of the People, Mao's Mausoleum, and The Museum of Chinese History. Tiananmen Square can hold 1,000,000 people, they say, the largest urban square of its kind. Tiananmen gate on the ...
Beijing, China nietsreuef... to just sit on a park bench and relax after all the walking through the Forbidden City. We are still getting used to being 'stared' at by many of the locals who don't seem to see many European/Western people. It is quite amusing at times. We just smile and find that they then smile back. After all that sightseeing we decided it was time for some shopping! We decided to get a taxi down to one of the shopping areas where I had spotted some bargains when driving ...
Beijing, China gregjul... can overdo it. I think too with less travel time between the Asian ports, you didn't have as much recuperation time and reflection time from the previous country before taking on another one full force, so as a result I missed some stuff in China. But the grounds itself was huge, spanning across square miles of space, but even so it was filled with people. And they were all pushers. They didn't care about anything but their own enjoyment and viewing pleasure, so if ...
Beijing, China hayesbk... we got there by boat from Beijing zoo - the first part was by speed boat, then 2 cruise boats until we reached the gates. In the park after a walk around, we hired a pedlo boat and paddled around the whole lake which at times was exhausting but when you got the rythum it was alot easier. There were about 22'000 tourists there that day which was not too bad as the day before there was 30'000 - you wouldnt think that by looking though as the palace grounds are massive so ...
