After a good sleep in our air conditioned bungalow we had homemade breakfast and caught a 9 am shuttle from the campground directly to the Vatican. We soon learned from a man selling coverings on the street near the entrance to the Vatican that we would not be allowed in without first covering our knees and shoulders. He tried to make a sale, dropping his price from 5 euros per covering to 5 euros for the three would need. Emma did ...

Bit of an early start again today to catch an 8:30 train to Milan en route to Rome. Had breakfast on the train using groceries we picked up yesterday. In Milan we needed to get from one station to another in order to catch our connecting train to Rome. Easiest option was the Metro. I had planned to walk the 1.5 km but it was quite hot And we arrived 20 mins late so time was a bit tight. The ride to Rome was fantastic. It's the first time ...

... huge set of pretty iron gates and expectations were rising as we drove up the long ( yes longer than ours) drive, through woodland, past a lake and olive grove to arrive at a huge villa set in gorgeous grounds. A wonderful evening was had luxuriating in the thought of lie ins, no schedule and long lunches. The weather forecast looks amazing for the week, the fridge is full and we have plenty of Limoncello. I am one very happy ...

... 612 I was thinking we had quite some way to go! About 1.5 hours later we arrived near the bottom of the summit at about arch 200. At that point the hill slope flattens out somewhat, but the portico continues at least another 1 km. At about arch no. 50 we stopped for beer and a panini. We had come this far, so we decided we may as well continue walking back into the centre of town. We passed by the Statue of Papa Gusieppe, the inventor of frozen pizza. We ...
