      ... taxes and fool the authorities. A lord moved his peasant workers here to clear land, but to avoid laws and taxes it was important that the town wasn't classed as an inhabited settlement. So until 1797 when Alberobello as given town status, the people had to live in the trulli that could be quickly dismantled when needed.
      Tax avoidance in Italy is still evident today, I was told during our last visit that people avoid taxes ...

      ... is that down south in Italy is very different from the well known areas of Tuscany, Lakes, Dolomites etc. Will see what Sicily brings. 6.11.12 Alberobello to Crotone. Pouring rain, windy, but we got into the car and set Bruce for Cortone and true to form he led us and we did about 20 Kilometres through narrow streets lined with rock walls, similar to what you see in the English countryside.       Last day in Puglia and it did not disappoint. We had a lazier start and then skyped the harveys. Josy and Chris – you did not respond? Tomorrow is a travel day so we may not get round to this for a while. Then after Orvieto we are going to Ambra – free accommodation and no wifi so you may not hear as much from us then.       ... village in Italy. Lots of nice home, views, alleyways etc. and it was more spacious, with easy parking and very much enjoyed by us both. We had lunch at what looked like a simple restaurant but it was very nice and looked like a cave inside. Orrieche with broccoli and breadcrumbs – very tasty and Grilled beef with rocket & cheese and salad. Every day we order just two courses and share it. Back home again. Lovely place but the internet is not working very well at all ...

      After a long chat at breakfast, Lina made our lunch and we set out for Alberobello in Puglia. We have never been to this area before. The roads were as quiet as we have had them in Italy – even on the autostrada. Nice for a change. We arrived at our 'hotel', which is just a couple of kilometres out of Alberobello.
