    This morning we went for quite a long walk in the Bosco delle Pianelle nature reserve. They have a visitors' centre, which was closed, but we had picked up a leaflet from Martina Franca so were able to follow the trails. There were wild cyclamen growing everywhere, and also some yellow autumn crocus. One thing we have noticed is that there is no bird song anywhere, and it seems eerily quiet after England, where you hear it all the time. ...

    We drove to Alberobello this morning, where there is a Unesco World Heritage site which looks like a little town for gnomes. It is a higgledy-piggledy mass of 1500 trulli, conical dry-stone buildings made from the local limestone which dot the hillside.
