... not limited to that.

To travel Africa you also need patience and a lot of time. As we grow old**, we may have built up enough capital to comfortably afford the travel but we will also have less time and much more responsibility, both in work and the family environment. It is easy to travel to i.e. Barcelona, P**th and New York in 2 week trips but this is a lot more difficult to do on our continent.

A sabbatical at age 26?

I've been ...

... during apartheid, still pretty much the case, from the little I saw--felt like some sort of return. To what, I can't really say, except that we stopped a shopping mall on the way back from the airport, and they had a Steers--the McDonalds of South Africa, although they have McD's too--and had a deliciously greasy, delictably ...

Tana-Antasirabe-Johannesburg

Home sweet home

... did not get more time to spend together..... During the few days we were back in South Africa it was hard to avoid the fact that South Africa still had many challenges when it came to its high levels of crime and unemployment. Each day I picked up the newspaper there where terrible stories of how crime was affecting all South Africans and often the crime stats were quite disturbing. Having travelled through fifteen or so countries I have realised that although not ...

The politics of succession

... private gain by the politically-connected. In other words, South Africa is also much like New Jersey. For world travelers from the Philadelphia area, all of this begs the question -- could Jacob Zuma possibly be as bad as John Street? Of course, analogies to the imperfections of U. S. politics only go so far. Bill Clinton's theme song in 1992 was Fleetwood Mac's bubblegum hit, Don't Stop Thinking About ...

Where the Wild Things Are

... township remains to be a ghetto. A fellow backpacker, Gez, and I walked through the Soweto with our tour guide. There is a lifelessness here that I found to be quite depressing. But it's hard to make any real judgments after spending one day here. Tomorrow I head out to Namibia to see the sand dunes. It will be nice to see a little nature for change. Cheers, Paul

We walked through the Company's Gardens and visited the South African National Gallery for a few minutes as it was about to close. We were guests of the gallery as we did not have to pay an entrance fee as it was so close to closing time. This was a great exhibit about HIV/AIDS called "Breaking the ...

With Bill and Cheryl Jahns in Johannesburg

We left Washington D.C. for the long flight over both the North Atlantic and South Atlantic oceans. Halfway across there was a fuel stop in Dakar, Senegal located on the west coast of Africa. After 17 hours of flying including the one hour stop, we landed at noon Thursday in Johannesburg, South Africa. Bill Jahns was waiting for us. How wonderful to see him! Bill and Cheryl are special friends in the ministry. Bill, Cheryl and I attended Ambasssador College ...

Day 3 - Monday 11th November 2002

Today we went and booked our 8-day Safari to Victoria Falls. We had to drive to Pretoria to a backpackers hostel. This guy called Jacco ran the hostel, and by golly was he a strange fish. He was a largish chap with an even bigger belly, hanging out over his decrepit tracksuit pants. The trip cost us 3950 Rand, which is about 400 Euro. For this we were getting all accommodation, food, transport and a guide. Which I figured was good value for money ...
