Wed 5th: Woke up in Tarquinia (more pics) with Rem's ear needing medical attention. The delightful small-town world was full of remains of Etruscan Italy. It is so old, it is older than Rome! Etruscan society was more ...

We are sad to leave La Spezia, the people here are so nice and the place is very quiet and beautiful. However, we must start making our way down to Rome. The next stop is a little place inside a National Park called Tamalone.

The scenery on the way down is gentle rolling hills with plenty of agriculture. We are getting more and more olive trees and grape vines. We are definetly back in Italy. Our next place is a self catering place. We are met by ...

The guides said that we would have a simple picnic lunch. What they didn't say was that it would be two courses! First, they served us flat pasta with asparagus sauce and then brought out sausage and roasted potatoes. I liked the pasta and the potatoes but the sausage was not my favorite.

After lunch we ...

1651. The Soul of Grossetto

Day 264 5 hrs, 11.5 kms Next morning I walk back into the heart of Grossetto, the provincial capital. But oddly it all seems to be very modern without a historical core. Just to make sure, I ask someone... Sure enough, I'd walked right past the Old City. Glad I didn't miss it, because this looks like a very unique old city. Surrounded by double layers fo walls, the walled city is shaped as a hexagon, with towers that are shaped like arrows at each corner. Since Grossetto ...
