Horse riding in Uruguay

Hello all,

we left Montevideo and took a bus to Colonia Del Sacramento, a cute little town 200 km from Montevideo. The old centre has been decleared World Heritage by Unesco. We stayed in a nice Posada with a swimming pool! But although the skies were clear, it was aroubnd 14 degrees celsius, so not that warm at all. We just wore sweaters, but the Uruguyans looked at us like we are some freaks, as they were dressed in snowboots, very warm wintercoats, ski pants, hats and gloves...!

Row, row, row your boat

Day 10 only a few days left :( Today we hit our second country and we just barely made it across the river with our stomachs still in tact but I'll get to that in a second.

We had the morning free to roam through BsAs so Kira, Shaun, Laura and I decided to go see Eva Peron at La Recoleta Cemetery. We walked a pretty decent distance I'd say around 30 blocks to get to the cemetery. It was well worth the walk. The cemetery looks like it's own little city. (FYI: free entry) Its amazing to...

... from Italy, Spain, Germany, etc. passed through that building just as so many people had passed through Ellis Island in New York City, to help weave an intricate tapestry of this multinational city. We rode farther through the ecological park next to this neighborhood alongside the wide Rio de la Plata (Silver River) separating Argentina from Uruguay. The city of Buenos Aires actually lay at the mouth of this river as it coursed right into the south Atlantic Ocean. The ...

An Overnight Stop

... night-watchman had gone to bed and locked us in. After some frantic searching and waking up half the hostel´s occupants, the plonker let us out and we made a quick dash to the ferry.

We´d banked on a nice, quiet ferry ride back with, hopefully, time to catch up on the shut-eye. This all sounded perfect apart from the fact that we were joined on the boat to BA by around 2,000 chanting footy fans after a South ...

Ferry to Uruguay!

This was one of the early mornings departures that are so difficult to get Nik up in time as he has gotten used to sleeping into 9am! Oh, the pleasures of traveling!!

We got a taxi to the harbor, Puerto Madero and got the ferry over to Uruguay. We opted for the ferry that took only 1 hour instead of 3 hours.

I heard that alot of people that are living and studying in ...

La Boca

... post. Seeing that other side of La Boca, the part that wasn’t just a façade of paint and tourists’ imaginations run wild, the part that wasn’t to Argentina what Disneyland is to Smalltown, USA, made me kind of despise the tourist trap we had just left. And it made me kind of sad to know that most people don’t want to see this other side of Argentina, or any other country for that ...

Day 3 - Buenos Aires - First Spanish Lesson

... some spaghetti with salsa sauce. After lunch we went back home. We had a nice dinner and went to bed.

Just to let you know what I don’t like about Argentina is people leave their dog poo everywhere and other people trod on it. The thing I do like about Argentina is I saw someone pick up their dog’s poo today. Another thing I don’t like about Argentina is that cars don’t stop when people are crossing the road.

I'm going, going, back, back to BA

After 4 weeks of travel in some of the most remote sections of Argentina, I made my way back to Buenos Aires yesterday via a 20 hour bus ride from Bariloche. Because the bus ride was the first real chance I got to reflect on how much I had seen, it wasn't until then that I realized just how far I had travelled - the distance covered by my original zig zag trek from BA to Ushuaia equalled the distance that someone would need to travel to get ...

A brief trip to South America, Spring 2005

... dance it everywhere...on street corners and in nightclubs...beautiful couples, fully dressed but it is the sexiest dance there is, revealing her legs as she moves...the man in control...woman in submission. There are gorgeous antique stores and romantic dance clubs in the St Thelmo district, art nouveau fashion and food in Palermo Nuevo (an upcoming barrio) and professional dog-walkers in the parks of Retiro. The city is big and has many faces ...
