Tallinn August 2001

Tallinn After visits to Berlin and Prague soon after the collapse of communism, we had long looked at the guide books and fancied a trip to the Baltic States and particularly Estonia because it is a country so few people can place on a map with any confidence, let alone visit. We decided to go in August and accordingly we booked a 3 night stay at the Hotel Domina Ilmarine, which we had viewed on the internet www.dominailmarine.com which proved to be possibly the best decision we made! Historical Traveler Reviews of Domina Ilmarine Tallinn

Lovely place

from livH
This is a lovely hotel, just outside the old town by the port. Don't be put off by staying outside the old town, Tallinn is TINY, it was no more than a 10 minute meander from hotel room to old town square. The room we were initally given was a bit rubbish, small, no bath with two singles, but we smiled sweetly at the lovely lady at reception and she gave us an excellent room. If you aren't 100% happy I'd go ask, the estonians are really friendly and helpful. The BEST part of this hotel is the excellent breakfast spread that is included in the price.

My partner and I loved Tallinn and if we ever go back we would stay at the Ilmarine again!

Nice hotel but not without problems

from Loughtonian
An imaginative conversion of an old fish market outside the old city but within 5 minutes walk of the Fat Margaret Gate, across a very busy road and tramway. Also quite near the ferry port (important to us as we were travelling on to Finland (recommended!)). The immediate surroundings are a building site on a former industrial plant and not very inspiring, plus some rather good residential flats.

Staff multilingual and quite helpful, but we booked half-board (through an agency) and were most disappointed to find the hotel would not honour the booking. That was because they had busloads of Russian coach tourists staying, and the restuarant was full -- so this engendered much emailing (fortunately free through their excellent guests' PC) with the agency. Only on the last night did we get dinner - and thatwas only average. The Estonian wine, by the way, is made from apples.

Rooms average and difficult to ventilate; noise rising through the rather strange inner skin of the building. An interesting 4 nights, though, and Talinn old city is excellent!

Winter break

This hotel is well run with staff speaking many languages fluently. It is a 10 minute walk to the city wall and a further 5 mins to the town square. Lone women travellers should be careful as the area is old derelict dockyards which are about to be redeveloped. The restaurant gives a 10% discount to residents and is cheap and good value as it is not within the walls of the city. Not all the rooms are double storey. Ours while clean and tidy, was slightly pokey and you could hear the intimate bodily functions next door!!. There are no tea and coffee making facilities in the room but the mini bar is a fair price. Breakfast is busy with an adequate, but not inspiring buffet. It is extremely likely you will be ripped off by taxi drivers both going to and leaving. You should pay about 60 krones (the local price) but realistically you will be charged closer to 200 (unless you pay upfront I dont know how you can avoid this). All the hotels and drivers seem to be in on it. The taxi can get to the front door - I dont know why a previous reviewer had so many problems. A nice hotel and good value for money.

Very Good

This is a very comfortable hotel about 10 minutes walk from the very centre of Tallinn. The rooms are well equiped with safety deposit box, good mirrors, satellite TV and mini-bar. The bathroom is excellent. One of the best hotel showers I've ever experienced. If you are slightly disabled as I am the whole hotel is very friendly. Ramps where there are stairs and even a little seat in the shower.

I only ate in the hotel once, apart from breakfast and the food was fine, but not outstanding.

One word of warning though. I think Estonian licencing laws must be strict. Last orders are at midnight, even for residents. Therefore the continential drinking and chatting late into the evening doesn't realyl happen here.

Staff were all very efficient and the place is spotlessly clean. English is spoken throughout.

Recommended.

Enjoyed my stay at Domina Ilmarine

from hmbpaisley
I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Situated in a good location, just a few minutes away from the Old Town Walls, room was compact but clean, great shower.

In the three days i stayed I had no reason for complaint. an added bonus was free internet access for guests which made contact with home easy.

staff in the hotel were always courteous and helpful.

Super location

from welltravelled
Spent 3 nights at this hotel. Very neat, modern and spotlessly clean. Very comfortable beds(twins, no doubles?), great shower(walk-in) competitively priced mini bar but no coffee/tea facilities. The staff were very efficient and polite and all spoke English. Situated about 2-3 minutes walk from one of the gates to the Old hTown and a further 5 minutes to the Town Square.

There is a sauna/jacuzzi room but a charge is made.

We would stay here again having seen the location of other hotels featured in Trip Advisor.
