... cover the ground in a day, never mind take in even a fraction of it is beyond me, but we had a packed 3 hours just checking out the Egyptian, Roman and Asian artefacts, and skulking around the apartments of the former royal palace. For me, the building itself was the most impressive exhibit, and the conservatory leading to the first floor garden my favourite room - no photos, I'm afraid, as I was too cheap to buy the permit - so you'll just have to go yourself!

... retreat to when the summer heat got too much. We were there on the day the fountains open and watched the opening festivities. There were pyrotechnics, traditional Russian dancing, and singing. The fountain system at Peterhof is quite impressive, as there are no pumps or mechanisms – the entire system relies on gravity. The palace and grounds are beautiful, and we enjoyed the beautiful weather.
