... tomorrow there will be 8000 cyclists riding up here in a cancer fundraiser. Our hotel starts serving them breakfast from 2.45am and they ride up and down the legendary road as often as they can all day. Yes, that's right...UP and DOWN, repeatedly! It is a Dutch event called the Alpe de Huzes and last year raised €30M. The challenge is 6 ascents and descents. Last year someone cracked 9!

The last few days have been a visual feast and today was no exception. We left Chasteuil this morning to drive to Briancon via the scenic route and that it was - up narrow goat tracks, across recently opened mountain passes and along rushing streams. A distance of 390 miles today brings us to just outside Grenoble and the small village of Bernin where we have a room with a view of The Alps.
Today's drive has been through a series of well known wine regions starting with Champagne and in no particular order, Macon, Beaune, Nuits St. George, Beaujolais and we even passed near Dijon where the mustard comes from.

Susa Italy was a very cute little town nestled in a valley halfway between Briancon and Turin. We did not spend much time there but since it was the destination of our carpool, we decided to check it out before continuing to Turin. We went to a local restaurant and ate some pizza, and wandered the streets a little bit before heading to the train station.
