And voila.... a river out of nowhere

... rain finally stopped after nearly a week so we were able to enjoy some out of Scooby time!

Saturday 7 Nov
Forecasted for rain today but it held off until late afternoon which gave me time to replace the washer in the gear box and for Kim to go for a run, which she was hankering for as she had been getting a little cabin fever of late due to the rain and lack of exercise/time outside!

France sucks at Halloween

We have at long last arrived in France! We ended up scrapping the visit to Marseille, both since travellers we've met said its not worth the visit, and since we heard it's not really the place to be wandering around the streets at 10 at night looking for a place to stay. So instead we caught the bus up to Aix-en-Provence, which is pretty much the cutest town on the entire planet. We're pretty sure we were the only people ...

Rome...?

... didn’t even really resist. They knew the status to being ’Roman’ and that it would bring them instant infrastructure, roads, money, etc.

But enough of all this Roman talk - we’re in France after all! Italy will come when we set sail tomorrow night. For now we’re dining on our last few snipits of cheese, provincial bread and aioli sauce.

... add details, and as Vincent so skillfully did: show movement and texture with brush strokes. As I photographer, I must only capture what is there. Although I can make some minute adjustments, it’s reality. So many times I wish a tree would just move to the left, the shadow would fall differently, or that a person would get out of the way! In the few ...

Over a month in...

... present was some cereal and kidney beans from Amy...we're waiting to experience her famous chilli con carne (hint hint). However, the French don't really 'do' birthday cakes in the same way that we do, so, instead of spending 15€ on an admitttedly beautiful patisserie cake, we've been sticking candles in madeleines and such like, so not all of our birthday traditions are lost!

As well as some of this quite blatant indulgement, we've also been immersing ...

... we were nearly blown to Marseille. Tomorrow we are going on a lunchtime cruise on the Rhone with more food and wine and before that visiting the famous bridge and hopefully we will have time to go over to see the nearby fort in the afternoon.

Then we start the final run north - first a night at Beaujolais, then 2 nights at Strasbourg and one last night at Munich before we leave Big ...

A day in Provence

... embarked here in 600 ships of all sizes for Jerusalem. They were gone 4-6 years. It was a disaster, the French army was defeated in Egypt and Louis captured. He paid a huge ransom to be released. In 1270 Louis left from here again to try to convert the Muslims and the Sultan of Tunis. Plague broke out among his army and Louis himself died of it in North Africa. Aigues Mortes (old French for "dead water" because of the salty marshes in the area) is still quite ...

Searching for Van Gogh's Ear

... one. Even though we are both aware that days alone are important to our survival as a married couple, it really isn't that easy logistically to take a day alone when you are only in a town for 3-5 days. Nonetheless, I prepared myself with a map of my own and took Chad's French phrasebook. I was awake first so I decided to go downstairs, alone, to have some coffee. When I came back up to officially split our day (i.e. room key, money, etc.), Chad was still in bed and suggested ...
