Today is my last day as a registered doctor in Australia. Tomorrow I retire officially. Mixed feelings, obviously but the right decision, definitely. Drove on to Lourdes. This was where the Virgin Mary appeared to St Bernadette 16 or 18 times in 1858. We were pleasantly surprised to find the religious site not crowded and no trouble to look at everything, as all the basilicas and the Grotto etc were in a Sanctuary that was free ...

... grotto watching the ever growing line of people processing through the cave-like area, venerating the grotto where Bernadette experienced many of her 18 apparitions of Our Lady.

Such a large crowd all gathered, in a shared belief . . . I was perhaps a little wanting . . . the public outpouring of faith and prayer has never been an area of comfort for me. People were on their knees in the middle of walking areas praying ...

    Day 4: 119km and 3600m of ascent.
OK - now we are in Lourdes. For those of you of the Catholic faith or who have any knowledge of the background to why Lourdes is of special interest, you might be surprised to find me here. It just happens to be about 12 km from where we finished this stage and to be a bigger centre with more hotels. For those of you who don’t have the background, this is a place ...
