... and did a circuit of the squares and small streets, which were all charming. We had lunch in the park, where the kids fed the lone pigeon. Three seconds later, 140 pigeons descended onto our picnic.

It seemed Setubal's sights were shut, so we picked up a map and caught a ferry to Troia. The ferry crossed the marine reserve in 20 minutes, pushing its way through hundreds of jellyfish, bobbing orangely and ghost-like under the surface.

Back at the car, after a quick sandwich, we drove on the Torrao, half an hour away. Wanda's love of the Arabic led her to point out the box-shaped houses, with traditional blue stripes round the door and windows, which were quite pretty. They were a distinct style from the Portuguese tiling, which pervades most towns. Without Wanda to point out the difference, I wouldn't have noticed them.

... and a street where Wanda said the prostitutes hung out. We also visited Wanda's friend's bric-a-brac shop, which had a friendly dog called Tito. Nick bought some postcards.

At the end of the alley was the square of Pedro Nunes, a 16th Century navigator, who, according to Wanda, came up with his theories of navigation due to the access he had to the Arabic library at the castle. Wanda is a great advocate of all things Arabic.

The winery tour had been booked. I was excited with anticipation. I expected descriptions of the terroir, notes on the influences of sea breezes, fermentation processes old and modern and at least one old peasant with purple, horny, wine-stained feet, reminiscing about how the annual harvest used to cure his verrucas before they sang to the grapes and all got drunk on last year's vintage.
