... used my final day of my eurrail pass for this trip only to find that the trip from Visp station to the Zermatt was not valid despite being told by two train operators that it was. I also couldn't get through to the girl at the station that my eurrail pass allows me discounts for the train but she kept telling me, 'no, no, you can't use anymore days it's full'. Today wasn't the first time I have been stuffed around by the Swiss. It's hard to believe that Einstein was educated here.
... to go UP it in 20 minutes!! Unbelievable!
On our walk back to the hotel we had our first of what would be many encounters with cows and their bells in Switzerland. There was a guy walking his cows into town and they all had bells around their necks making a clunky tune as they walked. It was so charming!
Back to our room and Witek was feeling a bit worse for wear seeing as he wasn’t 100% well before our 5 hour hike. We decided to just get take away ...
We woke "late" (8am) and were the last to leave our bunk. Skipping breakfast, we began our 5 hour journey back to Zermatt. We chose a route that would give us a different view of the valley, but involved 1800m of decent. We paid for it for the next few days. We arrived at our apartment and ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertownFarmor agreed to watch Evie and Tyler for 2 days while Sue and Tom hiked to Hornlihut, the refugio at the base of the Matterhorn. Hornlihut is at 3200m directly below the Matterhorn (4400m) and serves as the base camp for those ascending the Matterhorn. When we called for reservations, they asked if we were ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertown... and headed straight to the roulette wheel. Juliana wasn't a fan of our dealer, who was being fed lines by the pit boss. She was getting bad vibes and wanted to call it quits after only three spins, but Paul enjoys taking money from people he doesn't like. So, we hung in there, played the outside for a while, and stayed about even. We put a couple bucks on the inside (3, 7, 13, 21, 31 and 33), and 3 came up. We threw the dealer $1 SF, after he begged for a tip like a filthy hobo ...
Gimmelwald, Swiss Alps, Switzerland paul-jules... of glacial runoff that, in different light, would surely have glowed turquoise. Unfortunately the clouds were ominously hanging over us and over the surrounding mountains. And Birg still stood above us, precariously balanced on the cliffs above, so we proceeded up to the cable car station with an older German couple with an adorable German Shepherd. What a concept-- a German Shepherd from Germany! We sat and took a load off on the Birg observation deck ...
Gimmelwald, Switzerland nglick... on, and Kelly was wearing leather sandals. Neither were good enough to try to get a firm foothold on the tiny rocks that kept wanting to slide away. Shane did a pretty good job of directing traffic, from what I could see. I reached the end of the hill before they did, and when I looked up I didn't see anyone. I walked across the base of the hill to see if they made it across to the other side. No, not there. So I backtracked a bit until I did ...
Gimmelwald, Switzerland canadianaccent... there is absolute chaos at the Hauptbahnhof. Seriously, did I mention that the Swiss are an orderly, organized people? This is CHAOS. That must be one helluva a technical difficulty. As we come down the stairs from the track, a horde of people in a little group are running against the tide, desperately tugging luggage behind them, rather like the train station scene in "Mr. Hulot's Holiday." Outside the station, a completely disorganized crowd of literally ...
