... depressingly small and grim. The first lighthouse on the Pacific Coast was built on Alcatraz Island in 1854, and the second lighthouse, an 84-foot tower built in 1909, is still in operation. Today the buildings are in various states of disrepair, but there are beautiful flowers and gardens everywhere plus, because there are no natural predators, it is a bird sanctuary and has a large population of Western gulls -- we even saw baby gulls in a nest.

We had a beautiful drive north from the Salinas area yesterday -- mountains on the left and mountains on the right. ... boats were in the docks at Bodega Bay, and we capitalized on the fresh seafood with some crab and smoked oysters. Further along on Highway 1, we saw a movie production company setting up to film. They were just about ready to block the road from traffic when we drove by. We enjoyed a drive through Sonoma county and wine tasting at a beautiful estate winery.
