... depressingly small and grim. The first lighthouse on the Pacific Coast was built on Alcatraz Island in 1854, and the second lighthouse, an 84-foot tower built in 1909, is still in operation. Today the buildings are in various states of disrepair, but there are beautiful flowers and gardens everywhere plus, because there are no natural predators, it is a bird sanctuary and has a large population of Western gulls -- we even saw baby gulls in a nest.
