... this day by real live Russians, mercenaries from the old Evil Empire! And sure enough, there they are when we enter the plane, sipping bad coffee and wearing dirty T-shirts. Remember Kramer's two Russian cable guys on the old TV series 'Seinfeld'? Those two guys are the pilots on Daallo Airways Djibouti-Hargeisa run. The good news is that the plane flies very low the whole way, so if we crash into the soft desert sand ...
Djibouti, Djibouti hardiek... happen. The night before I awoke about 2:30 to a flashing light outside. I went on deck to check it out and it was nearly constant lightening on shore. We had been told that near dawn we might get a cell signal. When I awoke at 5:30 I tried, then again at 6:30 and got "emergency only". By 9am I could send some text messages, but wonder what will happen to the reply if I'm out of range ...
Djibouti, Djibouti voyager-sue... misunderstanding than the language. There are many more white people here than we were used to from being in Eritrea and with that comes a lot more hassle and begging on the streets. We were not planning to come to Djibouti but as you can't go directly from Eritrea to Ethiopia so it wasn't really a choice. We paid 45 pounds in the UK for a visa (would have been a lot cheaper in Eritrea) and it only lasts ...
Djibouti, Djibouti mandy_karl... I was duly delivered to a small back street hotel with no air conditioning and cold showers in the shared bathroom.Perhaps one made up for the other, and I had saved at least $10 per night. When I went out to explore,it didn't take long to pick up faux guides. They couldn't be shaken loose for a good half an hour, but I left them as destitute as I found them. They should know that I come from a hard nosed country! The best money changer was an old woman in a market street near the ...
Djibouti, Djibouti wanderingstar... French couple going to their apartment and the Japanese guy catching a bus to Ethiopia. John, Brian, and I checked into the Horseed Hotel which is one of the "cheapest" hotels in the city. One thing you should know about Djibouti before coming here is that prices are equivalent to or greater than prices in Europe. Djibouti is a very small country and as far as I know does not produce anything. A majority of Djibouti's income seems to come from its location as a ...
Djibouti City, Djibouti dan-levitan... up the manager while we kept the driver waiting. But it proved to be easy. Someone on the train had recommended the Alia hotel as being close to the station, and even offered to take me there. In the confusion of arrival I couldn't find this person, but after waiting outside for a while fending off taxi drivers, I admitted to a boy that I wanted the Alia hotel and he took me there. I was able to get my Eritrean visa the next day (Wed), and while waiting ...
Djibouti, Djibouti thesunroseclearHi Folks, New years celebrations. Prague, Djibouti cbb... swim?.........So we set off in a pretty big boat with lots of beer and food and BBQ's on board. We sailed out into the Indian Ocean for an hour or so until some small desert islands came into view. The crew lowered some boats to carry all the booze and food in, and we all had to swim to shore, as the boat could not go over the coral reef. We all had just best day, a desert island all to ourselves ...
