Sunday 14 August 2011. Our day off in Kangerlussuaq dawned fair, a few broken clouds about but it promised to be a warm one, according to the notice at Reception. Narsarsuaq has some really strange history. It was used as a military base in WWII, and there was an army hospital built here off past the outskirts of town that is shrouded in mystery. Apparently what went on in the hospital was top secret, and the details were never released. Also, when it was torn down, some French company or organization paid millions of dollars for the salvaging rights. ...

Today started by walking around town with a girl I met from Alaska. She came here to see how alike it is to Alaska, and the verdict is very much. Even though there are barely any buildings in the town, they are spread out so much that it's actually a few km long. One thing I've noticed is how family-oriented the Greenlanders seem to be. There are always out riding bikes together or rollerblading down the one paved road. ...

The wind was raging till early morning and when we finally set off after breakfest and decamping the foehn indeed slowed down, but the sea - beneath a gray, cloudy sky - was still quite choppily.
