... Order in a small monastery in the 13th century. It is situated right below where he lived in a cave and small dwelling prior to becoming Pope at the age of 79. There was an abbey built on the site which was destroyed by an earthquake so a new one was built in the 18th century. Throw in the occasional blue lake and the picture is complete. It was simply stunning. The town was very cultured with a couple of jewellery shops where I treated myself to a ring that was made by the old man who sold it to me. He is the 13th generation of his family to work in the shop. It was fascinating. We also bought a scarf and a wall hanging made from local wool from a charming talented lady.

... grappa with different flavoured sugars and liqueurs to add. We were so full we were uncomfortable. All the food was home grown, even the meat. Just superb. They charged Carol 20 euro a head!! It would be 100 dollars at home at least. She paid them 25 euro. Bit of a walk then a short drive to Sulmona where we are staying for the last three nights.
