... saw me," said Chen. "You now look at me in the same way. Is there something strange about my face?"
The man laughed. "You wouldn't know," he said. "I have a friend who bears a remarkable resemblance to you. The people you met on the path are also my friends, so they were naturally puzzled."
"So that's it," Chen smiled. "I also find your face very familiar, as if we had met before, but I can't remember when. I wonder if you can?"
... by "the dudes", one of whom owned a pet
tarantuala and scorpion. One evening, we decided to find it again, and
around ten o'clock, an eight person contingent of foreigners - all
armed with beer - trooped down the road and through the hutongs to find
him. "The dude" welcomed us, pulled up more chairs, and offered up
skewers of all kinds of food from the spicy hot pot. There was tofu,
vegetables, chicken dumplings, heart, liver, intestines and ...

We proceeded through the various halls till we reached the Wanfu Pavillion which houses an unbelievable 17m high statue of the Maitreya Buddha made from a single piece of sandalwood, jaw dropping! There were a couple of exhibitions we wandered around and then we headed out. Nearby was a Confucius temple. But the temperature seemed to have seriously dropped and we were both absolutely freezing so we went round it as quickly as we could. Some of the exhibitions ...

Beijing, China maialex... he's kind of a slimeball. The impression I get from him is someone using his boss's daughter to try to get ahead in his career. There are probably some cultural nuances that I don't really understand, about putting forth the correct image and saving face, but it can be really uncomfortable when the person hiring you basically asks you to "say you're a full time teacher, but studying in your spare time" and that I work for his Education Centre ...

Beijing, China chinatours... speak any English. With taxi drivers, a map that has the Chinese and English name of where you want to go is critical. In many instances I had to resort to pantomime and the old standby of using my cell phone screen to communicate prices, dates, and times. The city, while not pretty, has lots of great historical sites and is a very interesting place to visit. I found a rock bottom airfare to Xian ($35 USD) so I get a 1 hr flight instead of the 12 hour train ride!
