This is the end

On Monday morning with our overland tour finished we were back on our own again as we set off for the coast. We were up at 4.30am to get a taxi into Nairobi city centre where we would be catching our bus to Mombasa. It tours out our taxi driver was a bit over enthusiastic with his estimation of the traffic levels in the city centre at that hour. We arrived at the bus station at 5.15am and then had to wait outside the ticket office for an hour till it opened then we waited ...

1 month in - we're even starting to tan!!

... walk down there though!! Also - Diani Beach is one hour away from us. It's bascially paradise with white sands, palm trees and clear blues waters. Turns out I (Lucy) need to get over my shark woes though. Swam about 30 m out yesterday and got a bit freaked out that one would come through the waves and eat me. Doofus.

We're in Diani again this weekend and have definitely come round to the matatu after our initial misgivings. They're ...

... glue - I tended to stick to tobacco and cannabis. Sometimes, I had to steal just to survive. In November last year I was arrested and sent to a holding centre for children and young people awaiting trial. After four months there, my case was dropped. The centre contacted Grandsons and asked them to take me in. I didn't arrive there in very good shape. My skin is still badly scarred from malnutrition, and I had lice. After a couple of ...

Where did the girl go next?

... as the Beach is located about a mile from the House, down more dirt tracks and certainly off the main tourist tracks; I asked my new Mummy if she could take me there - she obliged for 100 KS (just under 1 pound) - I'm glad my Mummy at home doesn't charge me I'd have no money! Found the beach; nice but not nearly as nice as the beaches you see in the magazines nor what I've seen in the Grenadines Guy - this beach is for the local Mtwapa people and ...

... lights in town). We went with a Kwacha volunteer, MJ, who is also Mike's girlfriend. It was a huge market - apparantly the largest in eastern Africa and had a ton of stuff. Most of the stalls were second hand clothes and shoes. What I was most amazed at though was the stalls with winter jackets and acessories!!!! Since I don't have a lot of time I am going to rip off Jessie's idea of writing a list of the most notable things here in Mombasa ...

Amboseli in the Shadow of the Mighty Kilimanjaro

... never got close enough for the cheetahs to attack. I've never seen so many flamingos in one place--it was quite amazing and breathtaking. They look quite a bit like the plastic pink flamingos! We had both a driver and a tracker in our vehicle, and both were native African. The tracker spoke only Swahili, the driver spoke both English and Swahili. The driver had a fabulous accent, and spoke about elephants as "ellies", and pronounced zebra with a short "e", rhymed with Deborah. Our ...

Dar es Salaam Again

... The Rastafarian owner ran past with his four other dogs and I had to give up my crazy puppy adoption idea. I then met with disaster. First I ran to the toilet desperately needing to empty my bowels. There was no toilet paper so I had to do the bucket thing. Lucky I still had diarrhea so it washed off easily. The latch on the door was difficult to open, and in the process, I ripped open my right thumb. So I then went to the office to complain and get some ...
