He looked at me in a few yoga postures and then preceded to massage the LEFT side of my body, saying that all the pain was cause by a problem on the left side. I know that bodies are strange, with all kinds of interconnectedness, but my right shoulder really hurt and I really wanted it massaged! Didn't happen. After the massaging he put hot things all over me, because apparently I am too cold inside. Then, he got out ...
Dharmsāla, Himāchal Pradesh, India courtenay... noses and eyes in the Tibetan style and I showed him different ways I draw various facial features. The last few nights now I have been working on my drawings and he continues to show me ways to improve. He has also begun to show my how to draw Tibetan Lotuses. Paula doesn't speak English so these moments of artistic exchange have been not only helpful but some of my most meaningful memories so far on the trip. But back to New Years, it has been very ...
Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India k0e0n0z... been inside a refugee community before and it is all very political and active. I shall be doing some conversational english lessons with monks who have fled Tibet. The idea is that you talk to them and they tell you their experience in order to be able to tell it again and agian to get support for their cause. (I did the volunteering thing and the guy told me off for being british, whoops. It's very hard being told off by a Tibetan, they are all so lovely and innocent and ...
Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India twinsparkle... ran very thorough classes on meditation and basic Buddhist philosophy. We were a very motivated class: almost everyone took notes or kept a journal of some kind.Lots of reading and introspection. Inspiring and refreshing to see everyone so into it. Took a day trip down to Gyuto Monastery to see His Holiness the Karmapa last week but he had to cancel his public audience at the last minute. Guess it just wan't in the ...
Dharamsala, India evensong... with pressing crowds and sauna-like heat. Once I boarded the bus and took my seat I quickly downed a Liter of water and enjoyed the ride out of Delhi. Falling asleep with dusty urban scenery, I awoke with winding roads through pines and beautiful mountain views. Finally after about 12 hours the bus pulled into the heart of Mcleod Ganj (the area just north of Dharamsala where the Dalai Lama resides) and I found my way to a guesthouse and settled down.
Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India jonathanfoster... here for at least another week to be reexamined by the doctor and then after that I am not sure. I think that I will take a Hindi class in the mean time, just to have something to do. It would be nice, if you have actually read to the end of this entry, to get some support, as it can be lonely and sometimes scary to be sick and alone in another country. But if not, it is O.K., I feel the support anyway even if it is not explicitly expressed.
Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India cleatuslives... his room when he was away. "Bloody Tibetans," he said, while the Tibetan waiter cleared his plates. They were all taking classes in Buddhist philosophy and yoga and meditation. Leah and I played chess. Dogs came and went, lying on the mattresses with us until the others shooed them away. The light was coming in straight under the canopy and I looked up from where I had Leah almost in checkmate to see two of the travelers sharing a pair ...
Dharamsala, India altnomad... in Bodnath, the largest Tibetan community in Nepal on Tibetan Uprising Day; the day all the protests and troubles started with the Tibetan community in Nepal. I've taken some time to try to familiarize myself with the various sides and interpretations of the Tibet-China situation. This is what I've come up - I can't stand China. Ok, let me clarify. As individuals, I have no issues with Chinese. Plenty of my students were and not a few friends are Chinese or of Chinese origin ...
Dharamsala (McCleodganj), India djchurch... this level of cleanliness but, as I began to see, it was far more than a school. Plenty of houses lined the roads leading out from the central hub and there were also shops and eating houses. The people who lived and worked here had made an environment for themselves that was very pleasant to be in.

Thirdly, there was an aura of peace and even happiness about the whole place. People smiled and greeted me, held doors open for each other and generally looked happy. This seemed ...
