... emotional well-being of its people. Thus, the government has taken a cautious approach to development. The Royal Government's view is that modernization and development should be guided by the "Gross National Happiness" of the Bhutanese people, rather than by the Gross National Product. Likewise, development should be consistent with Bhutan's capacities and needs.

... butter tea. That night was spent with another tour group we had hooked up with, sitting around a campfire with the other host family, eating, drinking locally made rice wine and singing. T and the other group's guide, Ugyen, insisted that Jeremy sang for the group, but everyone had just eaten and he felt it was not polite to make people sick so soon after dinner. The local families also commented on Jeremy's height and told him that his thigh bones would make an excellent flute-like ...

The 21st Century Meets the 13th Century

... the recognition that 1) when the hell am I ever going to be over here again and 2) during that time (also when they have their festivals) the country is swarming with tourists "with big cameras', whereas now I have the place almost entirely to myself. Two people, including myself, checked into my hotel yesterday. More than anything, the biggest issue for the country is maintaining controlled modernization. They recognize, particularly as a land locked ...

Thimphu

... What else... Well the pristine naturalness is by far the most striking thing - particularly in contras to India. There are beautiful bubbling brooks and clean litter free rivers. People are not allowed to pollute into rivers and are harshly punished if they do. The government has set up an infrastructure to manage trash and sewage. There is no trash on the side of the road and the burning of garbage is banned. They even have people in orange jackets with ...

... to fight the current and get over to the left side of the crowd, and get solid footing. I had lost Kitty and Sonam in the melee, and so I found a vantage point to spot them. It took a few minutes, but we were able to reunite (thanks to the fact that we stood somewhat taller than the locals). Given that we were tourists, the stadium ushers pulled us aside from the crowds and escorted us to a section reserved for tourists, which was ...

Onward and Upward: The last leg to Bhutan

The day started when it was still night - or so it seemed. Our 4am wake-up call from the front desk came far too early, though right on time. I do not think I slept a wink, though my body clock is so messed up I could have slept for hours and just be running to catch up! It didn't help that our hotel hd floors that seemed to be made of the squeakiest material ever - and the handful of other travellers checking in around midnight made an awful ...

Bhutan day 6

... Off we went, past a couple of stupas, and everytime we looked up, we were getting closer. I suppose that this is the added bonus of going straight up. After around thirty minutes of struggling and shooting, we had arrived. We did a lap of the monastery first of all, spinning all the prayer wheels whilst reciting the first poem once again. Om, you get the drift !!! Inside, we were greeted by a few monks, and inside ...

Getting High

After two days of adjusting to life in Paro and an incredible hike to the Tiger's Nest monastery the real reason for my trip to Bhutan kicked off: 9 days of trekking to Cholmolhari. Cholmolhari is a massive mountain. At 23997'it ranks as the second highest peak in Bhutan. Our hike would take us through the tranquil Paro valley, along rolling foothills and crystal clear rivers, to the base of the gigantic peak, over high passes and through some of the most ...

... of my trip. I was looking forward to it and therefore was able to forget about the festival. The climb is quite steep, but as you go along you keep getting glances of the monastery so it keeps you going. When you finaly get up there, you cannot take anything inside with you and you cannot wear anything tied up. I had to take off my headband and couldn't wear my sweater tied around my waist. The view from up there is beautiful, but really it's the ...
