It was lovely having Kaye stay with me for a few days. I picked her up at the Nice train station on the Monday evening. She had been on a cycling holiday with her brother and sisters and so was already in Europe. The train from Brussels was late. Surprise, surprise!!! Unfortunately I had to work the next two days but Kaye was happy resting her foot. She had been told she had tendonitis and it was quite swollen and giving her quite a bit of pain. (It now seems it ...

We have breakfast on the Terrace that provides us with a great view of Lake Como, the sun is shining, a family of swans are swimming past. The breakfast spread is good, coffee is good, ah Bellagio it is everything we expected. As the shops are not open we decide on a walk around to Punta Spartivento or Point where the Wind divides, or to you the Point of the Peninsular. It provides great views to both sides of Lake Como to Varenna to the East and Managgio to the West.

... Ok, the bell chimes twenty four times each day, some of these seemingly random, but we discover the church was built in the thirteen hundreds, nearly as old as the unassuming little grey church nearby that just happens to be two centuries older than its larger neighbour. That sort of sums up Varenna. Other places on Lake Como shout out "hey – George Clooney lives here" or “This spot was used in a James Bond movie” but Varenna just sits quietly and ...

... and so the train makes a quick stop then moves off leaving six of us stranded in the carriage thinking what do we do now. The next stop is Bellamo just a few KM's down the line and the Poms had moved to another carriage in shame. That leaves us and the all American young couple. We have no trouble getting the door open and get off. We seek options on how to get back to Varenna from the station attendant. Take the next train going back, no it ...

... our heads. We are not city folk. After wandering the streets for a while, Jeff asked a man standing outside of his restaurant why the metro was closed and after grabbing an English-speaking employee from the back, it was explained to us that today is a holiday and the metro closed most likely within minutes of us getting into Milan. Of course. Our place is 20 minutes away from Milan by metro so you can only imagine how long it would take to walk. We tried ...
