When we decided to zero in on ooty and kodai for our very recent tour,we did some mapping and found that coimbatore was the ideal location to start our tour since it was in middle of ooty and kodai. We were about 8 of us and we needed a minivan for tour so we again started hunting on google for a suitable car rental company, who had a good airconditioned tempo traveller. We found Kannan Tours & Travels Pvt Ltd as one of the leading ...
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India pranavsharma... br>The hotel over the road (Raja Hotel, named and shamed) had cheap rooms, but unfortunately the room we were given had no shower, although it did boast cable TV and a leaking toilet. The final straw came when a huge cockroach ran across the floor. When we asked to change we were told there were no more rooms.

So we went out and found another hotel, with shower and clean, cheaper than that one, and ...
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India lisa_and_paul... cleaning. My room is not a typical room that the girls stay in. It is a single room with a bathroom connected to it. The bathroom is European style with a shower head coming out of the wall next to the toilet and there is no curtain, so the water goes everywhere. There is no hot water in my room, so I don't use the shower anyway. I bathe using a bucket of water that I have to heat up with a water heater.
<br ...
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India mim301Everywhere in India seems to have two names - Trichur/Thrissur, Margao/ Madgaon, Calcutta/ Kolkata, Mumbai/ Bombay. Does anyone know why, is it to do with the British Raj and one name is old and one is a newer, Indian name? I arrived in Thrichur at midday yesterday. It was creppy because there was a transport strike which thankfully didn't affect trains, just buses and tuktuks (these are autorickshaws by the way). I walked for an hour and saw hundreds of men, 4 women and no other ...
Thrichur, India cruisekate... want to see or encourage is wild animals being held in captivity. We ask Ali to drop us off in town and we'll walk back to the reserve. Not in a huff or anything, but we want to walk around a bit and poke around. We shop at the Spicy Supermarket for spices and munch on fresh cashews as we walk through town. We are craving baked goods and find the High Range Drug Mart and peruse the aisle and find bourbon cookies (what the heck) and Masala chips. We walk through the bustling town - people ...
Thekaddy, India inahillebrand... from the ceiling and finding a position in which I could curl around my day bag and still not fall off my third-level cot...much to my surprise, the night went fairly smooth and I probably ended up with at least 6 hours of quality sleep (India is teaching me to develop the precious skill of sleeping anywhere)... So here we are in Mysore, home of Ashtanga yoga and sandlewood. We watched a political rally for the elections in the National Congress Party and explored ...
Mysore, India ruthiucsd... her face, "paise, paise". The bill for my meal was brought in an ornately carved wooden box. When I opened it there was cockroach sitting on top of the bill. It didn't surprise me in the least. Recently in restaurants when placing an order I have been told in no uncertain terms that I can't have it. No explanations. Usually a pitiful or shocked look. I have taken to asking for their suggestions and am eating some curious things. Meat is very rare. I was dreaming of burgers last night.
Coimbatore, India globalbedu... it's fairly effective. Again, we all stayed in a one-room house, this time with no running water, no toilet, and we also had a charming 14th roommate in the form of an unnecessarily large spider that we nicknamed "Butch". No one in the village spoke English and we all had so much fun. There were a ton of kids there and we played duck duck goose with them, red rover, and other games like that, all with no common language between us. Goats and dogs wandered around ...
Bangalore, India lindsayann... He clasped his hands together and said, "vaNakkam", the Tamil word for "Namasthe", which literally translates to, "I bow to the god within you." "Welcome to India", he smiled. "Please come inside." After a brief tour of the temple he invited us to a small chamber in the back, where we were to be blessed for good luck and safety in our travels. We had come to the temple to pray and be blessed. I have never been religious at all in my life, but this made me feel ...
