Baden-Baden

Thursday: I got up at nine this morning to catch an early train to Baden-Baden; I was a little cloudy from the previous night, but nothing a little coffee can't cure. After getting my Eurail pass validated, on my way to my platform I hear a train whistle; that's weird, I've never heard that before. After climbing up to my platform I think, "Was ist das!?!" A huge steam engine is sitting at the station. How cool. Since this is a national holiday, "Corpus Christi", everyone is traveling. After ...

A Brief Stop in Alsace

... that had sustained a lot of damage during the war. Sometimes traveling is all about last minute decisions that turn out to be can’t-miss surprises, and that’s exactly what Strasbourg became.

Though there aren’t many first class sights in Strasbourg – unless you count the Kronenbourg Brewery that can only be seen with reservations we didn’t have and the EU Parliament which is really just a bunch of politicians ...

AMAZING PLACE

This place was incredible! There was just too much that I loved to talk about, but one thing that was really cool was a hotel that they have called "The Little Prince"...after the book and movie The Little Prince. My parents and I LOVED this book when I was little and we used to read it and watch the movie quite a bit. It's a pretty strange story but really neat. One the side of ...

The cradle of Europe

... tarte flambée contains only bacon and onions. We decided to take it to the next level where they also add cheese as a topping. It was delicious! We completed our meal with French beer, Kronenbourg, which is everywhere here (though I have drank it in Canada as well). After lunch we started our second audio tour but were tired of walking long before it was completed. We had visited many important buildings outside of the ...

A nice detour

We caught the wrong train and wound up in Gengenbach. While we were waiting for a train back we met a lady who told us the town had a beautiful old-town section. So we went discovering again. After a good look around we stopped at a pub while we were waiting for the next train and got talking to the owner. Turns out he'd been to Australia on holiday, so we had a good time talking to him until it was time to go.

Glassblowing factory

Day trip from Villingen. Wolfach has a factory cum tourist attraction where they blow the glass manually. It was good to watch them making vases etc. in the traditional way. The highlight for me was dobbing Roz in to get up on the stage and blow her own vase. She did a good job, and we bought the vase and brought it home. A very special souvenir.

Cuckoo clock country

Home of the world famous Hubert Herr clock factory. Met Reinhard Herr, Hubert's great grandson, who still owns and runs the place. The clocks are still handmade and handcarved in the traditional designs. They even make their own clock movements. Spent an hour or so talking to the gentleman, and he explained ...

The bath

... with a scrub brush was quite an experience I can't remember the last time anyone has given me a good scrub. I bet it was mom some 45+ years ago. The old fashion German spank at the end was quite uplifting. I was glad that in the crème room we were left to our own accord. Boy did we crème up.......8 minutes worth. Then we went to the resting room, where they wrap you up tight in a sheet and blanket and you lay there for 30 minutes. We were so relaxed ...

Working on your birthday sucks!

While in Offenburg we went up to Baden-Baden on my birthday which is an area famous for its traditional baths...though we didn't really get round to visiting them as we had a picnic opposite where the English soccer team was staying and the boys were wanting to perv on the wives! Lol Had a near scare with the baby pram while we were wondering around the cobbled streets. Many of the streets are pedestrian streets in ...
